Reds Sign a Pitcher Off A Reddit AMA - seriously

    https://twitter.com/jeffpassan/statu...859663874?s=21

I read this Kyle Boddy Reddit AMA (ask me anything) when it happened and actually remember reading the post where this pitcher “shot his shot.” Apparently the pitcher followed up with Boddy and sent all his data and Boddy and the Reds signed him.

Unsure if this is really cool or really embarrassing haha. Maybe both?

Here’s a link to the Reddit AMA:

I think it's awesome. Why would it be embarrassing?

I was mostly joking, but like the reds are so cheap they don’t even sign players off the scrap heap, they are signing random dudes from /r/Reds

I try to avoid Reddit but I'll be going on there from now on. My fastball is sitting at 55 mph. I have a chance.

If you go, have me go with you. Thanks to my throwing shoulder being toast on its better days, you will look like Nolan Ryan in comparison to my feeble attempts to throw 60'. Heck I would look 50 Cent look good these days.

Hey, if he has gyro spin like he claims, throws 96 and can hit the strikezone, I don't care if they sign him off a backyard you tube video.....guys are going to be left behind in this truncated affiliates world. Shenefield won't be the last story like this we hear of
99% of all numbers only tell 33% of the story so when looking at the numbers remember that numbers is plural...

Especially with relievers. Small sample size luck alone means guys are going to wash out of professional ball before their performance matches their talent.

On the other hand, this goes to show that with today's technology, guys don't have to wait for an open tryout to get a shot in front of big league scouts.

It raises an interesting question though. If the tools do a better job at both finding pitching talent and improving pitching performance, what are hitters going to do? There's no equivalent of pitch profile data that hitters can generate except maybe something related to raw power.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I suppose that we could wait and see if this guy actually makes something of himself. Also, doesn't it seem strange that he has pitched in a number of places, and nobody scouted him or tipped some organization off to him? This is a Steve Nebraska story.

I’d rather have a bullpen full of redditors than our current guys at this point

If you can pitch like Miley, I’ll pay for the train ticket…

With the draft being cut down they need to fine the chaff somewhere.

This guy barely pitched in high school, and it took 4 years after high school for him to find a college roster spot. If he makes it to the Majors, well, Jim Morris step aside...

Re: Reds Sign a Pitcher Off A Reddit AMA - seriously

Last month, Shenefield saw that Kyle Boddy, director of pitching for the Reds and founder of Driveline Baseball, was having an Ask Me Anything(AMA) session on Reddit. He figured: Well, why not ask Boddy if he'd take a chance on a 26-year-old undrafted free agent with some pretty good stuff?

That's what Shenefield did, and on Saturday night in Bradenton, Fla., he made his affiliated Minor League debut for the Reds' Low-A club, the Daytona Tortugas. In Daytona's 8-5 loss, Shenefield tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, yielding two hits while walking none and striking out four.

Boddy was impressed with Shenefield's pitching arsenal, and an AMA chat on Reddit resulted in one of the most interesting signings in recent memory. It remains to be seen how Shenefield fares moving forward, but he's off to a great start and could become a great story.
