Reds Minor League Game Threads for Sunday, June 6, 2021

Louisville - 1:00 PM EDT - 10-18 - This game will wrap up the series with the Saints. The Bats are leading it 3 games to 2. Louisville has yet to win, or even breakeven, in their first four series here in 2021. No starting pitcher has been announced as of yet. Matt Ball has been released. He was on the 60-day IL, and did not make an appearance for the Bats. He pitched in 2020 for the Sugar Land Lightning Sloths, and that is a great team name. The Lightning Sloths were managed last year by ex-Red Greg Swindell. Other Reds connections: Brantley Bell was a Lightning Sloth, as was Greg Mahle, brother of Tyler. Good luck, Matt. In his first at-bat last night, Joey Votto forgot his helmet. LOL. Starting pitcher update: Josh Osich (6.43) is being mentioned now. I would imagine it will be a reliever day. Josh's longest outing is 3 IP, and this will be just his second start in 8 appearances. Osich is from Boise, and in the bullpen he sits in a corner alone with his thoughts. It's kinda like his own private Idaho. Alejo Lopez does not appear to be intimated by AAA pitching, Since his promotion, his batting line is: .538/.647/.692/1.339.

Chattanooga 3:35 PM EDT 17-12 - Matt Pidich (7.94) will answer the call for Chattanooga today. Pidich was excellent for Dayton in 2019 (2.22 ERA), but has yet to recapture that magic so far this season. Opposing hitters are OPSing .908 versus Matt through his first 3 starts. Pidich was hurt at the beginning of this season with a cervical strain/thoracic outlet, which may be the cause for the slow start. Eddy Demurias has yet to allow an earned run in 4.1 innings since moving up from Dayton. Dauri Moreta is a reliever to keep your eye on. Over his 6 seasons in the organization, he has averaged 12.5 K/9. In those 6 seasons, he has never been asked to make a start. Speaking of the Winnipeg Goldeyes, which we were a couple of days ago, Cory Thompson is pitching for them this season. He used to be a position players in the Reds organzation, before converting to a relief pitcher. Anyhow, Thomspon is pitching well for the Goldeyes: 12.0 IP, 8 H, 0 R. 0 ER, 4 BB. 19 K. Good for, Cory.

Dayton - 1:30 PM EDT - 16-13 - Dayton will send Spencer Stockton (4.30) out to the mound in hopes of splitting the series with Lake County. The mini-Ohio Cup lies in the balance. Stockton was signed out Indy ball as a Utica Unicorn. Indy baseball has much, much better nicknames than MLB. And, how can you not root for a team that has a pitcher by the name of Max Foody? Max Foody plays on Jimmy John's Field, and throws a fastball that is Freaky Fast. Jimmy John's Field is owned by General Sports Entertainment (GSE), however Utica's Downtown Development Authority will own the land it sits on and lease it to them for $1 per year for 30 years. The property was the site of a capped brownfield landfill that served as an unlicensed dump for household waste, that sat vacant the last 80 years. They are, literally, playing on a garbage dump. You cannot make this kinda stuff up. Last night, the Dragons incinerated the Captains, putting up 15 runs. That was the team's highest run total since 2015. Jacob Hurtubise reached base 4 times, lifting his league-leading OBP to .430. Brian Garman, a native of Wapakoneta, Ohio, is the Dragons pitching coach. His pitching philosophy is that in this era, a pitcher needs to eliminate the number of moon shots given up. Isn't it ironic? Dontcha think?

Daytona - 5:35 PM EDT - 13-16 - They Tortugas need their second wind. Quickly. They have dropped 6 of their last 7. Case Williams (4.20) has accepted the challenge. Williams will need to get his strikeout pitch working today. In 15.0 IP, he has fanned just 8. That works out to just 4.8/9IP, and in this day and age, that is not going to get the job done. Ranser Amador is off to hot start with the 'Tugas. In his 2 games, he has gone 4 for 8 with a double and a home run. On the other hand, Steven Leyton is hitless in 6 plate appearances since joing the squad. Gus Steiger was forced to make his first-ever pitching appearance in the 10th inning last night. It did not go so well. This has nothing to do with Daytona, but Leo Jimenez (Dunedin) has been hit by a pitch 10 times in 20 games. Ooof! There have only been 4 IBB in the league so far this year.

Dayton - Dayton got on the board in the first inning. Jacob Hurtubise singled, stole second (17), moved over to third on a passed ball and then scored on a ground out. That lead was short-lived when Lake County countered with 7 runs in the bottom of the second. Lake County is still batting. Stockton has retired 2 batters in the second, both on line drive outs. Suffice it to say, that Spencer is getting ripped all over the field.

Louisville - The Saints stuck a halo in front 1-0 in the third. Louisville has responded with 2 in the bottom half of the innings. Alejo Lopez walked, and the Punisher unleashed a lightning bolt over the wall. In the 4th, Louisville has been the recipient of 4 walks so far. It is now 3-1 Louisville. Alejo Lopez walks again to make it 4-1. The St. Paul hurler has thrown 32 pitches in the inning, 9 for strikes. Okay, enough is enough. Aquino just walked in a run. 6-1 Bats. What is that manager trying to prove. 6 walks in .2 innings. Get the guy out of there.

Louisville - They still lead 6-1 in the 8th. It was a bullpen day for Louisville as Osich, Perez, De Leon, Diehl and Carle have all thrown. Aquino and Friedl have both gone deep. Alejo Lopez has reached base 4 times on a single, a double and two walks.

Dayton - Payback is hell. Dayton drubbed Lake County last night 15-4. Today it has been all Lake County. The score is 13-1 and counting.

Louisville Recap - Not really much happened in this game. Bats prevail 6-1. The win game them their first series win on the season.

Jeff Osich started and went the first 3, giving up a run on 2 hits.

Dayton - Eric Yang and Jacob Hurtubise walked, J-Train Willems slapped his third single on the afternoon. And then Quincy McAfee cleared the bases with double. That 3-spot pulled Dayton to within 10. Yes, 10. 14-4 in the 9th.

Dayton Recap - It was one ugly afternoon for the Dragons, as they get belittled 14-4. Lake County had lost all 6 games in their previous series, but managed to take 4 of 6 from the Dragons.

Stockton, Medrano and Pucheu all got lit up.
Andy Fisher went 2.1 scoreless innings, fanning 2.
Braxton Roxby worked a scoreless inning, striking out 1. Roxby still has not given up an earned run all season.

Jacob Hurtubise walked twice, scored twice and stole a base (17).
Quincy McAfee doubled and drove home all four runs.
    Alex McGarry singled and doubled.
Jonathan Willems singled three times, giving him 5 hits over the last two contests.

Daytona - Williams was not on the Case today. Neither was Jose Franco. Clearwater is thrashing the Turtles 7-1 in the middle of the 6th.

Steven Leyton laced a double for his first hit in a 'Tuga uniform. Reyny Reyes has singled and homered (1). Reyes was 1 for 13 to start the season. But, has hit safely in his last 6 contests, going 9 for 22 (.409).

That's it. No, that is not it.

Steven Leyton walked, and Allen Cerda (5) followed with a 2-run shot. 7-3.

Daytona Recap - Tortugas get waxed 10-4. Daytona needs a day off plus a rainout. They have dropped 7 of 8. The last three losses, the pitching staff has given up double digit runs.

    The pitching was regrettable.

Steven Leyton - singled, doubled and walked.
Allan Cerda - doubled and homered (5).
Reyny Reyes - singled and homered (1).
