    Too many teams in MLB

Watching the Rockies is akin to AAA baseball.
Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Arizona, Washington, Miami, Baltimore, Texas....ugh. Talent around the league is stretched.

Don’t agree, the talent is out there, like a third of the league at any given time are just not interested in spending any money at all on it

For every monster team there's going to be somebody who sucks. There isn't a sport out there without its garbage teams.

Washington won the World Series, what, 2 years ago? Miami made the playoffs last year. And Minnesota won their division the last two years. Colorado was decent three years ago.

How do you explain the collapse of these teams other than they just don't have the talent? Washington as example doesn't have all those same players, neither does Miami. Miami dumped many of their players.

Agree there are plenty of crappy teams in ML sports. Not enough talent for all the clubs.

Reds AAA team has but a few players who could be called up right now and contribute. They've filled many gaps with guys like Moustakas, Suarez, Castillo, Akiyama, Miley, Castellanos....and not enough players like drafting India, Mahle, Senzel, Stephenson, ....

The NFL and NBA have had the same problems. If the NFL had not opened up their passing rules even more than after 1977 you would see some horrible QB play. There’s never enough QB. OL to go around.

Do you realize that in 1960, at the height of baseball's popularity with half the number of teams, the Cubs, Phillies, Red Sox and A's were all 30+ games back and generally 15+ games under 500?

It is mathematically impossible for everybody to have a winning record.

Of course those teams don't have the talent. It's because the Dodgers, Rays, Giants, Mets, and Cubs have a surplus of talent. It's not, and never has been, divided equally.

Re: Too many teams in MLB

You are making an argument I'm not assigning. Where did I say every team should have a winning record? Take a look at the teams I mentioned and the poor play. Look at the HUGE amount of strikeouts in MLB. And you really are making my point: talent certainly was NEVER equally divided, but it's even LESS now with more teams. There is not enough to go around.

Looking back at 1960 you do realize this is way before FA and TV deals and owners would hold on to stars, not spend on minor league development, and try and make money at the gate and from ads? This played a huge role in that scenario which is much different that today with a large amount of teams and not enough players of the talent needed.

I do think college baseball is much better now than the past and this helps, but there are just too many teams for college baseball to fill the gap in number of teams and players in minors which adds to this.

Strikeouts have nothing to do with talent, that’s a function of approach by both pitchers and hitters

There’s really not any evidence that talent is actually spread thin at all

Apparently the losers from 40 years ago just lost with more skill or something.

Base running is terrible, almost like these guys don't have a clue. Strikeouts are incredibly high, probably at an all time high as teams do not hit behind the runners or just go with the pitch. And Jacob deGrom? His ERA and strikeouts are almost non human to this point.

Reds hit five HRs off Rockies in first five innings which is a franchise record? Yes, TONS of talent all over the league. Expansion has watered down talent pool and impacted what is available in minor leagues.

Ah well I guess there’s only one possible explanation for certain teams sucking and offense being down then
