True, we have improved in the Wildcard race over the last few days, as we now have 1.5 game lead on the two teams in 3rd place.
I agree with your logic. It was interesting, maybe this was talked about on the game thread, but Larkin said that he hopes the front office gets help BEYOND people getting healthy. He said when the players are battling and the front office does nothing, it makes the players wonder if the front office actually wants to win. The voice of experience. Of course, then Sadak started supporting the front office, saying "relief pitching is the most valuable commodity".. Ok then, Sadak, let's trade for a starting pitcher better than Vlad then

On the wild card front, Padres’ next 21 games are against Oakland (4), Rockies (7), DBacks (7), and Marlins (3). Opportunity for them.

Their schedule gets tougher after that with a bunch of Dodger and Giants games in late August through September.

Interesting way to look at it. I knew they had 12 with the Pirates, didn't realize they hadn't played the Marlins yet.
Possible to pull that off, not really easy though..

Re: Tracking the Reds tough schedule until the trade deadline

You started this thread with a claim that the Reds needing to go 24-18 to have a chance at the division. Still achievable, but only barely. 0 margin for error since Monday.

Re: Tracking the Reds tough schedule until the trade deadline

The Reds have certainly made hay playing in their own division. Unfortunately they are 21-30 outside the division. That's mainly against the NL West with the exception of L.A. coming here, they are finished with. So there needs to be improvement against those teams. There's a great chance to do that coming up tonight with 3 against the Mets and 2 against the Twins. MIL has 3 against ATL then a series against PIT. The Reds may win both series and still lose ground to MIL.

yep, they are doing very well.. Even if they only end up winning 23 games, they didn't let this tough stretch knock them out of the race. Looks like I had a math error in the original post, so let's say the goal is 24-19.

Thanks for the thread, it’s been very useful. No math error, just turned out the recent Cubs series was four games rather than three. Reds can make 24-19 if they win today. Despite last night’s fiasco, they’ve done well, I never thought 24 wins was likely at all.

It’s ironic that Reds are battling the Padres for a WC slot since the Padres beat Reds 6-1 in season series. One lesson from 2021 is that the early games count. Hopefully next year Reds will be better prepared to win early.

According to Fangraphs, Reds’ strength of remaining schedule, .465, is the easiest in Major League Baseball. Brewers, .482, is on the easy side too. Padres, however, is .514, one of the hardest schedules among contenders.

If the Reds can just keep pace with San Diego for the next fwe weeks, they have a very good chance since Pads have a particuarly hard schedule beginning August 20 against the Phillies.

Let’s finish the stretch with a win today.

We are actually 1-6 against the Padres, not 0-7. I think the reason we have played so well since Memorial Day is the insertion of India as leadoff. To me that has been the biggest in season change. Need a win today after that horrible loss yesterday which falls squarely on the shoulders of our "analytical" manager.

Sorry, Reds did beat Padres in the ninth inning on July 1. I’ll edit the original post to reflect the 6-1 record. Early season losses to Arizona and then to San Diego (a direct WC competitor) have hurt.
