Reds Minor League Game Thread for Tuesday, June 15, 2021

Louisville - 8:05 PM EDT - 11-23 - The Bats are currently on a 5-game skid. They are on pace to win just 48 this season. Over the past 3+ seasons, they are 79 games below .500. That stinks. A lot. Bo Takahashi (4.99) has pitched better than that ERA looks, but the ERA doesn't look very good at all. In his 6 starts to date, three have been quality. His Game Score average is 49. But, last time out, he allowed 5 runs in 3 innings. He has been touched for 6 home runs over his last 4 starts. Louisville has scored just 16 runs in its past 5 contests. Mike Moustakas, in his first rehab start, has some heavy lifting to do. TJ Friedl's favorite restaurant is Chipotle. For the record, Friedl has poor taste in food. Michael Mariot joined the club during the last series, and posted 5 shutout frames. He is 32, under 6 foot tall and righthanded. There was a time in the minors that he consistently hit 98. I think those days are long, long ago. He pitched in the big leagues from 2014-2016 with the Royals and the Phillies. His numbers were not particulary good. You have to admire his persistence. He last pitched in the majors at 27, and is now 32.

Chattanooga - 7:00 PM EDT - 20-15 - The Lookouts are 3rd in the league, and 2nd in their division in the standings. Pretty heady stuff The starter for tonight's game has yet to be determined. I'm starting to think that the Lookouts are superstitious about naming a starter at a reasonable time. It's not that hard, they go in order. I'll guess Conner Curlis (5.65). In 26 innings, he has walked 16, while striking out 22. Chattanooga has added Dylan Baker to the roster. He is 29, righthanded and 6'3". He was born in Oregon, but went to high school in Juneau, Alaska. Their baseball season is probably about 3 weeks long or something. His persistence-meter is pegged too. Never has Baker thrown a pitch in the majors. He had some bad luck back in 2015. In his first start of the year, he pitched 5 hitless innings and fannedd 9. Unfortunately, he hurt his arm, had Tommy John, and then did not pitch again until 2017. Before the 2012, Baker was rated as arguably the best junior college player available. Jose Barrero has been swinging dynamite all season long: .327/390/.645/.935. How long until he gets pushed up to AAA?

Dayton - 7:05 PM EDT - 20-16 - The Dragons have the second-best record in the league, and lead their division. Yes! Another "To Be Determined" will start this game for Dayton. One place shows Eduardo Salazar (3.19) as being the starter. That's good enough for me. Salazar's excellent season was derailed somewhat by his last start out. He allowed 5 runs in 5 innings. He did strikeout 7 against 1 walk, so maybe there was a bit of bad luck mixed in. The Dragons have battled back to win five times after trailing by at least four runs since May 18. That's amazing. Carson Spiers was the Pitcher of the Week for his efforst last week. He made two relief appearances during the week, tossing seven and one-third shutout innings while allowing just one hit. He struck out 10 of the 24 batters he faced as hitters went 1 for 22 against him. Five of the 12 players in the league who have earned a weekly honor this season have been Dayton players. Jacob Hurtubise has been flourishing in his initial dip into minor league baseball:He is first in On-Base Percentage at .444, tied for Second in Stolen Bases with 22 (tied for third in all of Minor League Baseball (120 teams), three behind the national leader), tied for Third in Runs Scored with 31, and tied for Third in Walks with 24. The Dragons have committed only 29 errors in 36 games, ranking first in the league in team fielding.

Dave especially when playing at home Dragons will release Press Notes. They are pretty great. Salazar is pitching tonight.

Daytona - 7:05 PM EDT - 15-21 - The Tortugas record is a bit deceptive as their expected w/l record is 19-17. They won the first and last games of the series versus Bradenton, but dropped the middle 4. Tanner Cooper (5.89) is making just his third start of the season, so tonight may well be a bullpen contest. Cooper did not go more than one inning in either of his first two starts. He has been much better out of the pen, working to a 3.24 ERA. Gus Steiger has been swinging a smoking stick lately, compiling an 8-game hitting steak in the process: .393/.485/.428/.914. Garrett Wolforth has also been hot this month: Since the calendar turned to June, Wolforth is fourth among Low-A Southeast batters in slugging percentage (.628) and tied for the most triples (2). He is also tied for third in home runs (3), extra-base hits (7), and total bases (27), eighth in OPS (.961), and tied for ninth in RBI(9). Austin Hendrick was back in the lineup for the last game of the series. Daytona has 9 pitchers on their roster that are on the injured list! Let's throw this one in for laughs: Brandt Stallings' ,who is on the restricted list, Listed this as his motto to live by: "If you're going to be stupid, you have to be tough."

    2-1 Omaha.

Daytona - Tanner Cooper also gave up two runs in the top of the 1st.

Daytona roared back with 3 in the home half of the inning. Ivan Johnson, back in the lineup for the first time since May 7th, walked to lead things off. With one out, Michel Triana doubles him to third base. Garrett Wolforth singles home Johnson and takes second on the throw. Daniel Vellojin walks to load'em up. Wendell Marrero's infield single scores the second run. Reyny Reyes lifts a sac fly to bring in the third run.

And that's where things stand, as the game is being delayed in the top of the 4th by lightning.

Dayton - They trail 3-1. Eduardo Salazar has been charged with 3 runs (2 earned), He has walked one batter and struck out 10.

Juan Martinez, second game back after missing a couple of weeks, is responsible for the Dragons lone run by yanking one out of the park (3).

Daytona - The game has now been suspended. Palm Beach and Daytona will pick it up tomorrow, I assume.

Louisville - The Bats are being drubbed by a 9-1 margin.

Nothing good happening for Louisville as the game is in the bottom of the 6th.

Braden Shipley is on in relief, and it's deuces wild. In 1.1 innings on the mound: 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 HR.

Dayton Recap - The Cardiac Dragons do it once again. Trailing 4-1 going in to the bottom of the 9th, they walk off 5-4 winners on a Reniel Ozuna double with the bases full of Dayton runners.

Eduardo Salazar struck out 10 in his five innings on the mound. He was charged with 3 runs (2 earned).
Andy Fisher worked 2 scoreless, punching out 3.
Braxton Roxby came on in the 9th and got the win. Roxby had an adventurous inning, giving up a hit and a walk. But, he struck out 3 to keep the Tin Caps off the board. Roxby has yet to give up an earned run in 2021.

Francis Urbaez singled twice. His single in the 9th got things started for Dayton.
Juan Martinez singled and homered (3). He scored twice and drove in a 2 runs.
Mike Siani singled twice and pilfered a pair of bases.
    Miguel Hernandez singled twice.
Reniel Ozuna doubled, walked and drove in the tying and winning runs.

Louisville - Louisville is still in dire straits, although they crept a run closer. Friedl singled, and came around to score on an Alejo Lopez single. 9-2 Storm Chasers in the top of the 8th.
