Reds Minor League Game Thread for Friday, June 18, 2021

Louisville - 8:05 PM EDT - 13-25 - The Hunter Greene AAA Experience made its debut in Omaha, Nebraska. No word if Sweet Sweet Connie was doing her act. Overall, the debut has to be considered a success. I just hope his arm doesn't blow up on him. Because if it holds up, he is going to be special. He lit the radar gun up to the tune of 104. So, keep him away from Guitar Hero. Next up for the Bats is Michael Mariot (0.00). Mariot did not allow a run in five innings during his initial start for Louisville. It would be nice to see a half a dozen more just like that. That would practically be Fernando-esque. Mariot pitched his college ball at Nebraska, so this is a homecoming of sorts for him. Mariot was playing for the Cleburne Railroaders when he signed by the Reds. If they can find you in Cleburne, they can find you anywhere. My mother-in-law lives about a mile and a half away from the Cleburne stadium as the crow flies. On Fridays, there is a fireworks display 15 minutes after the game ends. When we visit, we sit out on her balcony and watch them light up the sky. Good times. Cleburne is actually right on the edge of West Texas, which is the same as being on the edge of nothing. If you drive south on 67, you better like barren land, mesquite trees and tumbleweeds. But, I digress. I would love to know why they signed him. He hasn't pitched in the Show since 2016, and he didn't pitch well when he was there. I need to stop being so negative. Eureka, I found something positive to say about Mariot:
The Minor League Sports Report and This Week in the Association announce that Cleburne Railroaders RHP Michael Mariot has been named as the PURE Performance Pitcher of the Week for Week 2 of the American Association season. Mariot finished the week 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in two starts.
Alright, let's move on. Hunter Greene is just the 3rd pitcher since 2008 to hit 104.3 MPH on the gun. I missed it. Yesterday was Davey Concepcion's 73rd birthday. Serious Trivia: The first Louisville Bats save at Louisville Slugger Field was earned by a member of the Nasty Boys. Name that Nasty Boy! Neon Deion holds three firsts: first triple, first walk and first stolen base. Shine on you crazy diamond!

Re: Reds Minor League Game Thread for Friday, June 18, 2021

Chattanooga - 7:00 PM EDT - 22-16 - There were a combined 366 pitches thrown in the game last night. Randy Wynne (6.00) is my shot in the dark as to who might be standing tall on the mound for the Lookouts. In 27 innings, he has walked just 4 batters. Which is remarkable. Wynne went undrafted out of college, before entering Indy ball. He was a Beaver for two years, and then an Otter for one more, before the Reds signed him at 26. In his first season as a Reds farmhand, he had one start in which he fanned 17 over 8 one-hit innings, including an Immaculate Inning in the 1st. Lorenzo Cedrola is hitting .364 over his last 11 starts. Over the course of 8 games, Jay Schuyler has cut down 3 runners on the basepaths. Jose Barrero has made 9 errors and has a .921 fielding percentage in 29 games. I started this too late. The US Olympic Track and Field Trials are starting. Gots to run. Hehe. Get it?

Okay, that was disappointing. All they streamed was the men''s hammer throw, along with the men's shot put. Both were the qualifying round and not the final.

Dayton - 7:05 PM EDT - 23-16 - Dayton is currently holding fort at the top of their division, leading Lake County by 2 full games. Carson Spiers (5.11) will be making his first start since being reinserted into the starting rotation. The man he replaced, Spencer Stockton, threw 3 excellent innings in last night's game. Pressure? Maybe a little. Spiers has been excellent in his last two trips to the mound. So, game on! For the year, his combined numbers between Daytona and Dayton show 42 Ks and just 7 BBs. Over his last 2 appearances, hitters are just 1 for 22 against him, while striking out 10 times. Spiers was quite a high school football stud, starting at quarterback all 4 years and holding several school records in that sport. Quincy McAfee, after a hot start, is just 2 for his last 25. Miguel Hernandez had his 10-game hitting string snapped last night. Noah Davis leads the league in OBA at .177. An interesting story about how Dayton became the Dragons. Team management felt it was unique in the sports landscapes (not many other teams used this name). Also, Dragons fly which kinda fits in with the other Dayton sports teams. Time was running too short to have hold a fan's 'Name the Team' contest. So, they agreed upon Dragons. Management wanted the people have some connection with the team name, so, they ran a 'Guess the Team Name' contest. Nobody won. Just kidding. They were also wavering on the team colors, nearly choosing red. This would have been how the mascot looked if they had chosen that color. Attachment 17375

Daytona - 7:05 PM EDT - 17-22 - Daytona lost a slugfest last night, 11-10. There might be a reprisal tonight as the Tortugas are starting Case Williams (7.71). Can you destroy a player's confidence in Low-A? It is challenge thy hitters, not thy pitchers.
Case has some really ugly numbers, should he back in extended spring training? This is the kid's first exposure to minor league baseball. 21.O IP, 18 ER, 5 HR, 4 HBP//, 19 BB, 13 K and 2.05 WHIP. I certainly hope he turns it around, and does continue to take ating after beating. Austin Hendrick launched the first of, hopefully, many home runs during his professional career. Leonardo Seminati has found another gear: .385/.529/.846/1.376 during the past week. Daytona is hitting .221 at home. That's awful, right? Surprise! Opposing teams are hitting just .205 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. 11 Daytona position players are hitting under .250 at home. Only 5 are hitting above that mark. Leonardo Seminati leads all Turtle players with a .333 home batting average. Wendell Marrero leads the team on the road with a .386 mark. As a team, they hitting .248 on the road, 27 points higher.

Danny Lantigua is placed on the developmental list.

Daytona - Tortugas are behind 4-0 through 3. Case Williams has walked 5, and is responsible for all 4 runs. He has thrown 73 pitches, 34 for strikes.

Wendell Marrero has singled for Daytona's lone safety.

Chattanooga - Okay, Randy Wynne was not a good guess. Michael Byrne started and went 2.1 in what is obviously a bullpen day. Byrne gave up a hit and a run, while fanning 3. His ERA is exactly 1.00. Matt Pidich came out next, and it is not his year. 5 hits and 2 runs in 1.2 innings. Lookouts are down 3-0 after 4.

Barrero, Kolozsvary and Rivas have all singled.

Chattanooga - The Lookouts need a new strategy. They scored 2 runs in the top of the 5th, and then gave up 3 in the bottom of the inning. That won't work. Their first pitcher of the night gave up one run. The second gave up two runs. The third gave up three runs. That won't work either. They trail 6-2 now.

Jay Schuyler walked. Robbie Tenerowicz got plunked. Two outs later, Lorenzo Cedrola singles them both home.

A whole lot of nothing going on right now. Reds farm teams have come to bat 18 times, and have scored a total of 2 runs, both on one swing of the bat. Zzzzzz.

Louisville - Logan Morrison cuts the deficit in half with one swing of the bat to leadoff the 6th (1). He is homewrecking AAA pitching since being signed. (OPS - 1.446).

Chattanooga Recap - The Lookouts put a run on the board in the top of the 9th, but it is not enough as the succumb to the Smokies 6-3.

After the first three relievers failed to provide, Eddy Demurrias (1.1) and Julio Pinto (1.0) shut down Tennessee the rest of the way.

Jose Barrero singled and was clipped by a pitch. He stole his 4th base on the season, and third in his last 4 contests.
    Luis Rivas singled and walked.
Jay Schuyler doubled and walked twice.
Robbie Tenerowicz walked and got hit by a pitch.

Daytona Recap They made a little noise in the 9th, getting the first two runners on, but couldn't get that key hit. 'Tugas fall 4-2.

Juan Manuel Abril and Frainger Aranguren were excellent tonight. Each hurled 3 scoreless frames. Abril fanned 4, Aranguren 1.

    Daniel Vellojin singled and walked.
    Reyny Reyes singled and walked.
