Do we really think that Tyler Naquin is below replacement level?

Because as of 6/22, baseball reference thinks he is. Purportedly, he's been so bad defensively that - despite having an above-average slash line of.246/.316/.463 (101 ops+) - the Reds would have been better off just picking some replacement level guy off the waiver wire and playing him instead.

    Sounds fishy to me.

Fangraphs has him at 0.4 fWAR.

It seems he really isn't a centerfielder. He's getting hit hard in CF, no matter what metrics you look at.

    analytics gone wild!

no one who has followed the reds closely this season would even dare make the argument that naquin has been "below replacement level." he has been one of the best NRI signings in all of MLB this season. has saved the reds with his bat quite a few times.

I mean, a .316 obp is pretty poopy for a bat-first position player.

Outside of his smoking hot first 2 weeks he’s been pretty meh.
What would you say.....ya do here?

After his big day yesterday Naquin is at .261/.330/./488/.818.

    Can’t argue with those numbers.

But he’s not a CFer and defensively Reds need a higher level CFer.

He was pretty meh in May (.728 OPS), but April (.914) and June (.861) he's been much better than meh.

yeah, we all know he's not a centerfielder. he's forced to play there because senzel can't stay healthy and shogo is ... definitely below replacement level. he's the best of our bad options in CF.

but he has really helped the club at the plate this year. OPS of .818 as KC mentioned.

Using UZR Reds have the worst defensive OF in the NL. Using DRS the Reds have the second worst.

They can’t continue into the future with this type of defensive outfield. Probable change next year if Cast opts out and/or the DH is available.

Naquin can hit for power, I like him out there, but in a corner eventually.

He's a below average outfielder by my eye, takes bad angles and gets poor jumps. Speed is average and arm is so-so.

He’s not below replacement level. Defensive metrics and their weighting in a player’s worth are steaming horse crap.

The Reds OF defense is exceptionally bad. No real getting around that. I made peace with the softball aspect of the team early in the year, but Naquin's a corner OF in CF and Castellanos/Winker are DHs on the corners.
    I'm not a system player. I am a system.

He’s been an extremely solid hitter. A very good one in fact. Other teams finding guys like Naquin is why other teams dust us so often. For once this team pounced on a diamond in the rough and folks want to slag him.

yeah, and frankly naquin should not be penalized by the metrics just because the reds have him playing out of position. if you are trying to truly measure the value of a player (the point of analytics) you must factor in things such as "only the dumbarse reds would have this guy playing in center ... but overall he's having a good season and is worth at least 1 WAR."

***"only the dumbarse reds and Cleveland would have this guy playing center..."

He played 135 games in center for Cleveland.
