And if David Ross had pinch-hit Heyward for Marisnick to start the 9th, Brach wouldn't have even gotten one batter -- Bell would have made the change right then.

Ross decided he would rather have Marisnick bat against Brach than have Heyward bat against Garrett. Not a good matchup for the Cubs in either case.

That is correct. Ross knew it just as well. Why burn your last bench bat to entice a worse matchup.

Before that pitch he was just terrible. Could have gone really badly.

He was terrible to the first hitter.

After that, he was fine. Gave up a really fluky single on a good pitch, then got ahead 0-2 and had the hitter at his mercy protecting the plate and swinging at his killer slider down and in.
