Reds Minor League Game Threads for Saturday, July 10, 2021

Louisville - 7:00 PM EDT - 24-33 - The Bats will be trying to walk a straight line, on sour mash and cheap wine tonight. Best of luck. Louisville is changing its nickname for tonight's contest from the Bats to the Mashers. Lots of cheap whiskey at the park tonight. The concession stands will be serving mashers and bang as well, often referred to as bangers and mash. That's going to be a lovely combo. There is a funny story about the origin of bangers and mash. Bangers and mash is a staple of the country’s (Great Britain and Ireland) overall cuisine and is a popular pub dish. The term bangers supposedly originated during World War I, when meat shortages resulted in sausages being made with a number of fillers, notably water, that caused them to explode when cooked. Something odd about tonight's starting pitcher assignment. It is Hunter Greene's turn in the rotation, but Ashton Godeau (5.50) is getting the nod. One could make the case that Friday night was Hunter's turn, since he last started a game on Sunday. Maybe it's a scheduled turn skip. Logan Morrison is still AWOL. Over the past 7 days, Mark Payton has gone 9 for 19, resulting in an OPS of 1.158. There is a new slogan around Slugger Field - Can you smell what the Schrock is cooking?

Chattanooga - 7:15 PM EDT - 32-25 - Chattanooga has lost 3 in a row after going 10 games over .500. Sometimes it's difficult to breathe that rarefied air. It should be Graham Ashcraft's (0.00) turn to take the ball. Consider that losing streak snapped.
A couple of notes about Graham: He did not allow an extra-base hit in 5 starts during the month of June. He has given up 2 or less hits over his last 6 starts. He makes hella popcorn on his nights off, and helped an old lady across the street, while simultaneously getting a kitten down out of a tree. That's it. It is Used Car Saturday, so if you're in the area, and your hooptie is giving you fits, slide on over and join the fun. Brian Rey and Drew Mount were both activated yesterday. Reyny Reyes was sent back to Dayton. Miguel Figueroa was sent back out to the Arizona Complex. TJ Hopkins, who is hotter than hot lately, came out in the middle of last night's game. His number for the month of July are just stupid: .500/.619/1.063/1.682. He is from Summerville, S.C., which was originally settled right after the Revolutionary War as Pineland Village. No reason was given for the name change. However, Summerville has not forgotten its past. Today, the motto upon the town's official seal reads "Sacra Pinus Esto (The Pine is Sacred). But, Summerville's real claim to fame is this: In 1899, the International Congress of Physicians (or "Tuberculosis Congress") listed Summerville to be one of the two best areas in the world for treatment and recovery of lung and throat disorders. It received such notation due to its dry and sandy location, and the many pine trees in the area that release turpentine derivatives into the air.

Dayton - 7:05 PM EDT - 34-23 - Winners of 5 straight, the Dragons will send out Noah 'How long can you tread water?' Davis (3.40) to the mound. Davis was signed as a free agent out of the Mesopotamian Valley when it was discovered that his slider had 14 cubits of horizontal break. That's the rumor, anyway. Davis missed his last start due to a blister on his finger, which affected his last outing. Attachment 17440 There have been various claims over the years that it Ringo, or George or John that uttered those words. Sorry, Paul. When did Fifth Third Field become Day Air Park? And, what does Day Air Park even mean? I am out of the loop on this one. Well, whatever it's called it has a ridiculous sell-out streak. That's one claim to fame. The second, you ask? In 2009, The People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) rated Day Air Ballpark one of the most vegetarian-friendly minor league ballparks in the United States. Hail to the Champs! The Dragons have clinched the “Mythical First Half” East Division title. Note that the league is not utilizing a splitseason format in 2021; There is no First Half or Second Half, and no First Half championship race. If the season were split into two equal halves, as it has been for more than 40 years prior to 2021, the first half would conclude with Sunday’s games. I think what this last statement is trying to convey is that they royally jobbed minor league baseball over the winter. Hail, analytics! Vulture report: Pedro Garcia over his last nine outings has tossed 14 innings, allowing one earned run (0.64 ERA) while going 5-0. Garcia leads the league in wins with six despite pitching exclusively out of the bullpen and not entering the league until May 27.

Daytona - 6:30 PM EDT - 27-31 - Jupiter broke out the brooms, and swept the Tortugas in a doubleheader last night. It's easy to see how the Hammerheads pulled this off, as none of their pitchers got shelled last night. Just when Daytona was sneaking up on .500, the rug gets pulled. Case Williams (6.27) will try to turn the 'Tugas over. Case has weathered a tough stretch, and has pitched will over his last two starts (1 ER in 8.2 IP). Allen Cerda has been reinstated from the I.L. Good news. Rafael Franco must have a little Billy Havoc in him. His RF/G in CF is 2.45. The rest of the Tortugas that patrolled CF compiled a RF/G of 1.39. Yikes!

Daytona - Not much happening in Jupiter.

Case Williams has surrendered a run over two innings.

Ivan Johnson has the Tortugas lone hit.

Dayton - No score after one in Dayton.

    Noah hurled a 1-2-3 first.

Francisco Urbaez doubled in the first, but was left stranded.

Daytona - If this game was tantamount to War, then Case Williams would be said to be Slippin' Into Darkness. He was pounded for 6 runs so far, and Jupiter is still batting in the 5th.

Daytona still has just one hit.

Dayton - This game is in the top of the third. West Michigan is leading 3-0. Noah Davis has a throwing error, 3 walks, to go along with two wild pitches in the inning.

Dayton is doubling up Daytona in the hit column. Double Urbaez. Single McGarry.

SS Ivan Johnson has two hits tonight. Since coming back from injury on 6/15, he's hit .264 with an OBP over .350 and a slugging percentage right around .500.
