Am I wrong to get more excited about McLain due to his getting $1MM more than his slot?

Means nothing except that he has Scott Boras as an agent.

Re: 2021 MLB Draft Tracker and signing updates

The Reds can go a maximum of 595K$ over their pool allotment and be limited to a penalty equaling a tax of 75 cents on every dollar of overages, anything past that amount and they would lose a future 1st round draft pick.

Their pool was 11,905,700$ and they've spent 12,340,000$ which equates to 434,000$ over. Meaning they'll owe at least 326,000$ in taxes.

Since they are over it, there really isn't anything at this point that would restrict them from going to the full 595K$.

So, theoretically they could offer Guilliams a maximum of 286,000$ to forego his full-ride to the University of Florida next year (the 125K$ limit for post 10th round players + the difference between 595 and 434). If Guilliams were to accept that mount he'd essentially be signing for the slot value of a mid 6th round pick.

If they were to go that route they'd pay an additional 120K$ in taxes for signing Guilliams, on top of the 326K$ in taxes they are already on the hook for.

Kinsm, are we maxed out? Do we have to release one player from minors every time we sign someone?

Pretty much, keep in mind teams get around it by playing with DL stints.

The Reds total reserve list roster limit for 2021 is 245 players, but they don't count players on restricted lists, inactive lists, or 60 day disabled lists - which the Reds have a ton of.

With all of the 2022 draftees and NDFA agreements they are probably close to 300 players in the system right now.

DSL has 8 guys on 60 day dl, plus 3 on the restricted
ACL has 4 guys on 60 day dl, plus 1 on the restricted
Low-A has 9 guys on 60 day dl, plus 2 on the restricted
High-A has 3 guys on 60 day dl, plus 3 on the restricted
AA has 6 guys on 60 day dl, plus 2 on the restricted, plus 1 inactive
AAA has 2 guys on 60 day dl
CIN has 4 guys on 60 day dl, plus 3 inactive (the guys on waivers)

So those 51 guys don't count towards the roster limits.

I'll bet a good chunk of the current draftees don't actually play at all this season.

EDIT: Just noticed I made a typo above - the roster limit is 255 not 245.

I believe high school guys often get a guarantee from the club to cover the cost of college after their playing career is over.

If that's the case, how is that determined wrt bonus limits and signing pool allotments? Is it a flat number that's calculated into the bonus? Because Guilliams, as a JUCO freshman, is walking away from a potential $63,000 (in-state)/$132,000 (out-of-state) scholarship.

Are the Reds still trying to sign Shawn Guilliams or is he determined to stay in college?

You can't get any better than signing them all.

Nicely done on that part, Reds. Hopefully, they'll all produce.

So, the college scholarship program has changed dramatically since I worked in an FO.

When I was there, the organization would include future education costs primarily only to HS players (and some college players) taken in the first 3 rounds (and supplementals). It would include in-state tuition and textbook reimbursement if the player enrolled within two years of retirement from the majors or minors. If the player waited longer than that the contract stipulation became null and void.

Now, the program is run by MLB out of the general fund and not written into contracts/paid for for by individual teams (I.E. doesn't count towards bonuses or pools). Instead of covering only the first 3 rounds it covers all players with remaining college eligibility who were deemed top 300 players prior to any individual draft, which tracks fairly well with the actual draft. In other words, it pretty much covers any non 4YR SR taken in the first 10 rounds. The 2 year stipulation still applies. Pretty sure it covers any school though, so private/public in-state/out-state doesn't matter, and it covers many more bills than just tuition and texts.

Guilliams fwiw, was not ranked in MLB's top 300 entering the draft, so he shouldn't be covered by the program as far as I'm aware anyway.

I'll also add that when I did work for the teams I worked for there was either no player being covered at that time in the program, or it was 1 or 2 max. It's hard enough to return to school as an adult now, when you add in guys who have accumulated hundreds of thousands via signing bonuses it's even harder.

Here is a link that tells a little about the current program:

Alright, so I got interested - shot off a text to confirm.

After today's moves they'll have 249 players count towards their 255 limit, another 48 that don't. So, they can add about a half dozen more before they have to go 1 for 1.

Pretty much the same boat as the other 29 clubs, either at the limit or close too it.

Re: 2021 MLB Draft Tracker and signing updates

Shawn Guilliams officially signed for 272,500$. The Reds will pay an overage tax of 110K$ on the signing.

Total Pool expenditures equaled 12,487,500$....or 104.9% of the total allotted.

They'll owe 436K$ in total taxes for going 582K$ over their pool, the 436K$ will be equally divided up amongst all of the teams who didn't go over their pool.
