    Re: 2021 Draft Day 3 Thread

    Seems like a very fine draft for Reds considering they were drafting lower down than recently. With all the college guys, hope some of them can help within a few years either on the field or in trades.

    Teams draft a few catchers every draft. They take forever to develop and you need a couple of them at every level in the minors (otherwise you can't field a team).

    So the Angels went with an all-pitcher draft…most, if not all, college arms.

    Fascinating.

    WOW...that's crazy! And all but 1 were college pitchers. I guess they know what their weakness is....

    I just mention in another thread that the Reds chose 19 college players and only 1 HS player and thought THAT was weird. This...

    Man this has been a weird draft.

    I wonder what effect - if any - this draft will have on their farm system a couple of years down the road

    Maybe Reds hope an influx of college players will help them meet near-term player needs internally and economically.

    Near-term meaning the next several years.

    Reducing the need to sign free agents.

    It’s a smart strategy assuming you get the right talent, and don’t pass up High School players who turn out to be difference makers.

    He's heading back to college. Will only be a junior, so he'll be in line for big money if he has a strong 2022 season.

    Yep.

    But my previous post was supposed to be about the Angels all-pitching draft and it’s future effects, though I left that part out :duh:

    They also drafted a couple Juco Freshman and Juco Sophomores. Not exactly high schoolers, but J1's could very likely be high schoolers that didn't make the 5 round cut last year.

    * 12 college pitchers (8 4-year, 4 JUCO)

    * 3 college outfielders

    * 2 college shortstops

    * 2 college catchers

    * 1 college first baseman

    * 1 college third baseman (JUCO)

    * 1 high school OF

    Re: 2021 Draft Day 3 Thread

    Cleveland and the Dodgers each only selected 2 position players. The Angels took all Pitchers.

    So three teams drafted 60ish players and only four don't take the hill.

    That's nuts!

    I suppose the theory is they'll be able to pick up plenty of position player free agents.
