    Extra-Inning Runner On 2nd Rule?

    What day you fellow RedsZoners?
Since MLB adopted the runner-on-second rule a year ago, 72% of extra-inning games have ended in the 10th. Runs scored in extras has more than doubled. And no game has gone beyond 13 innings.

The rule has done its job. But should it stay?

I am up in the air on it. But I doubt it ever goes away. They are trying to save pitchers

Drive it to the top of a mountain and when it's looking at the view, get in the car and drive away as fast as you can.

100% opposed to it. I am more opposed to the Ghost Runner Rule than I am the DH (and I didn't know that was even possible).
Eric Stratton, Rush Chairman. Damn glad to meet ya.

I'm torn on my opinion of the rule.

It's both exciting and aggravating. Has it stood points and bad.

I won't miss it If it goes away

    No, it's stupid.

You shouldn't be able to score simply by hitting two deep fly balls.

Thankfully, it seems like it's going to be gone along with 7-inning doubleheaders.

I like it in the sense that every extra inning game ends the same way, with one team's fan base infuriated that their hitters can't manufacture a run with a baserunner at 2nd base and no outs.

    From @mlbrandomstats:

The average extra inning game has taken 3 hr and 48 min this year and averaged 10.2 innings.

From 2010 to 2019 the avg extra inning game took 3 hr and 51 min and averaged 11.1 innings.

I’m not sure it’s doing it’s job. Games end quicker inning wise but not really time wise

Re: Extra-Inning Runner On 2nd Rule?

I favor a compromise of sorts. Let the 10th and 11th innings play out as normal and then if a game goes to the 12th start using this rule.

Re: Extra-Inning Runner On 2nd Rule?

I know my opinion doesn't align with most purists, but I say keep the rule.

I enjoy watching baseball, but not for 5+ hours at a time potentially. And I would guess most casual viewers feel the same.

More importantly, I think having to wear out your whole pitching staff in order to win ONE game out of 162 is not worth it. If the season was shorter (like last year's 60) so every game had greater weight, I might feel differently.

And as I've suggested in the past, why not a compromise? Innings 10-12 are standard; runner on 2nd starts in the 13th if it gets that far. Prevent at least some of the mega marathons.

This is pretty much the way I'm looking at it right now.
But I won't miss the rule if it's vanished from the face of the earth.

Both sides have a pretty clear shot at scoring that runner on second. One run each doesn’t break the tie.

If it isn’t doing the job, get rid of it.

Re: Extra-Inning Runner On 2nd Rule?

To me the extra inning rule is kind of like the shootout in soccer. You play a highly strategic game for several hours only to immediately turn it into a farce.

I would fine with the rule after the 12th inning on, at that point its best to achieve a result as expeditiously as possible.

On the flip side, I really like the 7 inning doubleheaders and think the players would too if they were prescheduled and each team played the same number of them. Could result in additional days off during the season.

But of course Manfred said that 7 inning games are more harmful to the players potentially playing 2-9 inning games.

I took the ghost runner’s Mom out for a nice steak dinner then NEVER CALLED HER AGAIN.
“The crows seem to be calling my name,” thought Caw.
