They've likely cleared salary because another trade is coming New York's way. I doubt They're throwing in the towel.

The Yankees have a ton of guys who will be exposed to the Rule 5 draft this winter, so this could be a move to clear some space on the 40-man roster to protect some of them.

NYY fans don’t seem too impressed with trading away Cessa.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Cessa is out of options and will be arb eligible this winter, you can basically pencil him into the 2022 Reds bullpen alongside Sims, and Antone. Hoffman, Hendrix, Warren, Feliz, Perez, Alaniz and a few Reds farmhands will also be in the picture.

They'll still need a few relievers between now and then to replace free agents Lorenzen, Brach, Doolittle, Hembree, Wilson (assuming his option is declined), Osich (assuming non-tender), and Garrett (assuming non-tender).

Keep on acquiring long term assets Reds FO.

I think it frees up roster spots for them to add in the next couple of days. Neither of those relievers are likely in their push for the playoffs.

What are the odds a 34 year old Justin Wilson declines his portion of a P/T option for 2022 valued at 2.3M$?

Keeping in mind, if he does go that route the Reds automatically get a 2023 team option tacked to him.

Right now I'd lean towards him picking up his player option, but if he pitches well over the next two months I see him declining it - forcing the Reds to pay him 1.15M$ to buy him out of the team option - and testing FA.

There's that, too. Though whoever they add will likely be short-timers.

Interesting factoid, the Yankees once traded Justin Wilson for Luis Cessa, reacquired Wilson, and subsequently dealt him along with Cessa to the Reds.

If they get one good arm (Cessa) for the bullpen for a PTBNL I'd call that a successful transaction.

This is exactly the type of trade that was begging to be made. Help the pen, where the margin for improvement is the biggest, while not giving up any prospects of consequence. I like how they got a free arm in return for taking on a contract. Heck, maybe they like Wilson also as a bounce back candidate.

They could stand to make like two more of these moves. A starter or a CF would be nice as well, but costly in terms of prospects. So at least make the easy moves.

    Good..for a start.

Wonder about the PTBNL, the yanks usually take the Reds lunch money on trades, anyone really talented on a minor league injured list right now?

Do they? I mean, the Chapman trade was terrible even given the extenuating circumstances, but I’m struggling to remember any other recent examples of bad trades with the Yankees. I feel like the Reds won the Sonny Gray trade handily …
