Amir Garrett vows to improve after rough 2021 season

Pitching in a tie game with the bases loaded and one out, Amir Garrett hopped up and down in front of the mound when he walked in the go-ahead run after he had Atlanta Braves catcher Stephen Vogt in a 0-2 count.

For a pitcher who dreamed of becoming the Cincinnati Reds’ closer and proving himself as one of the premier left-handed relievers in the sport, it was another chapter in a nightmare season. Nothing went right. He posted a 6.04 ERA across a team-high 63 relief appearances.

After walking two of the three batters he faced in his outing against the Braves on Aug. 10, he no longer was called upon in high-leverage situations, and he made only one relief appearance over the next two weeks.

Garrett is expected to command a $2.2 million salary through arbitration this winter, according to MLB Trade Rumors’ projections. He’s a candidate to be released this offseason if the Reds want to lower payroll, but they don’t want to give up on him, especially with a thin bullpen.

It's time for Amir to go pro in something other than pitching.

My ex-wife vowed to stop cheating too, but it turns out that she couldn’t make good on that promise.

It’s not the arbitrator’s money, is it?

Re: Amir Garrett vows to improve after rough 2021 season

The easiest decision the Reds will make this off season is non-tendering Garrett. He will not earn much more than $1M a year if a free agent.

I doubt they make an effort to re-sign him, change of scenery and all, but I do expect him to be a decent middle reliever next season and beyond.

He had a horrible, disaster of a start to 2021, but he after June 1, for 2/3 of the season, he put up a 2.82 FIP and a 4.26 ERA. That is about his career average as a reliever, and about league average for MLB relievers. I doubt the Reds will be able to sign anyone else for around $1M a year who is better than that.

Re: Amir Garrett vows to improve after rough 2021 season

Any team that signs Garrett needs to use him as a match-up lefty. Its harder with the three batter rule, but it can still be done and he can still be a useful guy to have. Bring him in the middle of an inning with men on base and a lefty or two coming up. Once he gets out of that, get him out of the game. If the Reds weren't already stuck with Justin Wilson, I'd be OK with the Reds keeping him and using him strictly in that role, but the Reds need a number one lefty and they have two more secondary guys right now, so Garrett is the one they can get out form under, so he's must be non-tendered if he can't be traded first (and I'm guessing he can't be).

He's a head case with nothing to back up his antics, tell him bye.

Big difference. You're ex could always cheat more. Amir can't get any worse.
