Weird that our bullpen improved so much so quickly that Santillan is the odd man out. He's looked great in relief his last few appearances.
"Today was the byproduct of us thinking we can come back from anything." - Joey Votto after blowing a 10-1 lead and holding on for the 12-11 win on 8/25/2010.

I'd probably have just cut bait on Hoffman instead of sending down Santillan, but I do get giving Hoff a little more rope out of the pen for length. Could easily see Santillan brought back in his place sooner than later.

    Good to have Lorenzen back.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Probably also has to do with the fact that he has options, and can get more regular work at Louisville.

Santillan was the only one who could be optioned.

Hoffman is the emergency starter on the staff. Out of options, had to hold him.

Not saying Hoffman is a good starter, but if somebody can’t go, he would likely be the one.

Santillan has already burned an option year this year, it doesn't matter if he goes up or down. Plus, he should probably keep starting if that's his plan for the future.

Hoffman is still a candidate for the 5th spot in the rotation next season at the moment, no reason to pass him through waivers where he ends up leaving the organization.

The last time they sent Santillan down, they said he would work from Louisville’s bullpen so starting him may not be the plan.

As for Hoffman, the only reason to keep him is if they think his career performance and numbers do not reflect his talent. He has been a bad pitcher in Colorado and Cincinnati, so is it really important to keep him?

Yes, it's important to keep pitchers around. A., half the staff could get hurt in the next month and B. the entire pen is set for FA this winter.

Santillan was the only reliever with options in the team's bullpen. He'll continue to work as a reliever with the Bats, but starting in the future is not ruled out in the future

And fyi... a 97 ERA+ this year means he's about league average - makes the league minimum.

Nobody had a problem with that until he got hurt. People were actually encouraging it.
