    Reds stats through 162 games, 2021

    Some Reds' stats through the end of the 2021 Reds' season:

    1. Standings. Reds finish at 83-79, third in NL Central, 12 games behind Brewers, 7 behind Cards. Cards overcame Reds for final Wild Card spot. Reds finished with sixth best record in NL. Reds 44-37 at home and 39-42 on road. Reds run differential +26. BR has Reds actual W-L identical to their pythag W-L. Reds plagued by 11-22 record against NL West teams. Reds 31-37 against teams who were at or over .500. Reds went 18-22 in last quarter of the season.

    2. Offense. Reds scored fourth most runs in NL, 786. Reds team OPS was .759, tied for second in NL. OPS declined in fourth quarter from league-leading .767. BA of .249 was tied for second in NL, OBP of .328 was fourth, SLG of .431 was third in NL. Reds fourth in wRC+ for non-pitchers (league average 100), Reds with 105. Couple of key splits: Reds 13th in NL hitting v. lefties at .685 OPS. Against RHP, Reds led the NL with .785. (.100 point difference hitting RHP v LHP.) Reds at home hit .816 OPS, just second behind Rockies. On road, Reds ninth in NL with .704 OPS, an even greater gap (.112 OPS point difference).

    Castellanos tied Harper of Phils for third in BA with .309. Votto 36, Cast 34, and Suarez 31 in home runs. Cast and Votto fourth and fifth in OPS among qualified NL'ers, at .939 and .938 respectively. Winker with .949 OPS but injury limited him to 485 PAs. India potential ROY with .835 OPS in 631 PAs. In Barrels/PA% Votto tied for 9th in MLB. Votto 15th in MLB in average EV, 92.9.

    3. Pitching and Defense. Reds allowed sixth most runs in NL at 760. Reds' ERA tenth best in NL at 4.41, improved slightly over third quarter mark, 4.48. Reds team FIP was tenth in NL, 4.34. xFIP, Reds eighth in NL at 4.18. Park adjusted stats, Reds eighth best in ERA-, FIP-, and xFIP-. Starters seventh in NL with 4.03 ERA and 4.19 FIP. Reds eighth in xFIP at 4.07. Park adjusted, Reds' starter ERA- and FIP- fifth best in NL. Bullpen 13th in NL with 4.99 ERA, 11th in FIP 4.56, 9th in x-FIP 4.34. Reds team allowed the third most runs in NL at home, 413. Had third worst ERA in NL at home, 4.74. Team ERA on road fifth best in NL, 4.06.

    Among Reds' starters, Castillo threw 187.2 innings, Mahle 180, Miley 163, Gray 135.1, Gutierrez 114. Mahle 13-6 with 3.75 ERA and K rate of 10.50. Miley 12-7 with 3.37 ERA. Castillo 8-16 with .3.98 ERA. Gray with high K rate, 10.31. Castillo with high GB% 56.6. Givens and Hembree led Reds with 8 saves. Garrett led Reds in appearances, 63, Sims 47. Art Warren with 1.29 ERA.

    Defense, Reds led in Fangraphs Def by Barnhart, 9.0, Farmer 7.2, Stephenson 4.9. As a team Reds 12th in NL in Fangraphs Def at -15.9, 14th in UZR at -16.9, 13th in DRS at -24.

    The two disastrous areas of Reds were bullpen and team defense.

    The offense was good but lumpy, not so good v lefties or on the road. Road can sometimes be a big adjustment for GABP teams. Starting pitching not as good as 2020, but solid overall.

    Reds must shore up the bullpen and improve defense, primarily in the OF. Reds also must add to RH hitting to help v lefty pitching. Cast likely leaving creates an even bigger hole in that area.
