Dalton Varsho. A name which will live in infamy.

Real talk: the Reds will catch and pass the Padres. Certainly by mid-September and maybe before that. The Fathers have a tough schedule, a scuffling rotation, and a lineup desperately in need of Fernando Tatis Jr. They are a .500 team since June 1st. I’m more worried about the Braves and the Phillies. Both are quality squads with similarly easy schedules featuring a ton of Nats and Marlins. I could see all three (Reds, Phillies, Braves) getting to high-80s, low-90’s win totals, with the Padres possibly looking up at everyone by the end.

This makes the next two games huge. Matt Moore is a lefty - but he’s awful. If Castillo can avoid s***ing the bed as he did against CLE in a similar spot, we should be able to win tomorrow. Gray v. Nola could go either way, but it’s house money if we win tomorrow. Getting set for 7 at home against the Cubs and Marlins no worse than 3.5 back… and maybe 1.5 back… the time could be now.

West Coast Fathers may be on a downward slide into oblivion. They've hit the skids in mid August. The brutal part of their remaining schedule is next month.

Time to Move: Scoreboard watching for August

Tyler Gilbert just no hit the Padres in his major league first start. So the Reds stay 2.5 games out of wild card

The Padres are in trouble. Better capitalize. Honestly… Reds we’re nearly no-hit themselves… by a much worse pitcher. Gotta take advantage…

Have to keep an eye on Braves, Phils, Cards, Mets. All could be relevant in WC race.

Reds with easier schedule and better record, but Reds’ lead over them small, 1.5-3 games. Of course, one of the three East clubs will win the division (thus departing the Wild Card race).

Not a cause for alarm but something to watch.

Good fact for Reds - after today’s game they have only three road series (8 games) remaining with teams above .500.

Three game sets at Brewers and Cards, two game set v White Sox. Other than that, all the games are either at home, against under .500 clubs, or both.

    Just…wow. Baseball is indeed weird:

    Lance McAlister
    @LanceMcAlister
    Arizona has 38 wins (38-80)
    31.5% vs #Reds, Padres
    5 vs #Reds
    7 vs Padres
Well, that's what those words mean. He was here. If they don't keep him, he will have been lost/subtracted. I headed out the door today with two shoes on my feet. If I don't return with them, I have lost them. If I do return with them, I haven't added them. ---M2

Don't look now but the farking Cardinals are only two back of us and one in the loss column. And 7 of their next thirteen are against the Pirates. They also have three with the Brew Crew. Do we want the Brewers to go ahead and sweep the Cards? I think yes. We need to focus on WC2.

Of course they are. They’re a well run franchise in a very weak division. Now imagine if they had had their ace. Reds need to make the most of rare luck like that.

    This makes no sense.

If the Cards are solid and they are in 3rd place, it's not a weak division.

Heck, the Cubs were basically a .500 team before their firesale.

It's not a weak or strong division..it's just a division. The West is better but the East is the same.
