That is such a boom or bust draft.

I'd do it in a heartbeat.

No way Rocker is available at 32. He may not even make it to 18. Not a lot of guys in the draft as polished as Rocker, medicals-be-damned.

    Re: 2022 Draft Discussion

Keith Law with a new mock at The Athletic:

    18. Cincinnati Reds: Daniel Susac, C, Arizona
I’ve also heard the Reds with Sterlin Thompson, who certainly helped himself down the stretch, playing a competent second base at the SEC tournament and beyond. The Reds could also be Neto’s floor or a spot for another college bat like Jordan Beck.

Scouting report: Susac has actually had a slightly worse sophomore year than freshman year, but the weak draft and the value of his position has moved him up into the top half of the first round. Susac, whose older brother Andrew was a second-round pick in 2014 and has played 114 games in the majors, is a solid-average receiver at worst with a plus arm, giving no doubt that he’ll stay at the position. At the plate, he starts out with an interpretive dance sequence that involves a huge step forward and then erases it with the same move backwards, but of more concern is that his swing is long, and he’s been far more dangerous against fastballs than anything else because adjusting once he’s committed to the swing is difficult. He has produced well enough in a Power 5 conference for two years to be a first-rounder, with a similar projection to Joey Bart’s out of college — low-OBP with power and solid defense.

Well, that's what those words mean. He was here. If they don't keep him, he will have been lost/subtracted. I headed out the door today with two shoes on my feet. If I don't return with them, I have lost them. If I do return with them, I haven't added them. ---M2

On the other hand, all these mocks coming out tell me nobody has any idea who the Reds are going to take.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I like the idea of drafting Cole Young. Sure, he's kind of vanilla in that he doesn't have one tool that really stands out. Plus, that Austin Hendrick pick is beginning to look iffy, and Young would be another high-end prep pick from the same exact cold-weather area (Pittsburgh). But I sort of like Young's floor and ceiling, and at 18 he seems like a good gamble. I'm not really in love with any of the college bats that are expected to go mid-first round. He seems a lot more interesting than Neto, at least.

I would also consider taking a chance on Rocker at 18 as well.

At 18 I’d rather go Chase DeLauter. High upside college power bat. The Reds have taken a lot of high schoolers in that mold, but not an older college bat with more experience. 18 is a weird spot in the draft, especially this one, which is considered weak overall. I would also like the Reds to pop The Hispanic Titanic in the 2nd round.

There is no such thing as a floor for a HS prospect. Their floor is they never sniff the major leagues. All of them.

Susac would be a horrendous first round pick.

Solid third or fourth round pick.

I don’t think Susac would be a good pick either but this is a bit ridiculous. Susac is absolutely going in the first round. Most mocks have him going in the first 10-15 picks. It’s unlikely he is even there at 18.

Just keep Cole Young out of Minnesota. Particularly Northfie. I feel like Rocker is going to be gone by 18, though, probably by somebody rich enough to be able to take a chance.

I know he will, my point is that profile of player belongs in the third round, and whoever takes him in the first will be making a horrible pick. My view has always been first round picks should have at least the potential upside of being above average major leaguers. The book on Susac is that he doesn’t seem to have that. He’s a lot more Chris Okey (or Andrew Susac) than he is Adley Rutschman, Yasmani Grandal or Tyler Stephenson.

If you're relying on public scouting reports for the bolded, it's probably not a great plan.
