The Reds need to turn Barrero loose. Barrero has proven himself at AA/AAA and he's not going to grow as an MLB player unless he's getting regular playing time at SS.
Sure if he can hit better than Farmer then the position is his. I just haven't seen anything to indicate that yet.

A team with a hole at starting shortstop could make a good offer for him. He certainly had a creditable season, decent hitting, occasional hot streak, and very good fielding.

I couldn’t justify turning down a good trade if Farmer is to be a utility man with the Reds.
There are tons of SS available on the market this winter. I'd guess it would be hard to get much for Farmer. Its one reason I think Barrero to CF could actually happen. He looks pretty good out there and the Reds are more likely to find an affordable SS option than one in CF (though I'd still target Starling Marte as my first choice).

First choice Barrero starts at SS and gets a couple months to see what happens. The Reds find an all around player for CF who can be an asset in one of the top 4 spots in the batting order who can also field, run and throw. Farmer becomes a 300+ PA supersub who plays all over (and always against LHP) and takes over at SS if Barrero crashes and burns. Senzel and Naquin or maybe Schrcck play RF with Senzel getting the job if he deserves it.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

I disagree on Farmer as a trade candidate. Unlike many of the available shortstops, he’ll be quite cheap. He’s reportedly on a very low salary this year, it appears he’s an arbitration guy for next season.

Reds are going to have to think creatively about trades. Unless they want to re-live 2021, hopefully the goals will be higher.
