    Crosley Field

I was only seven years old in 1970 when I started following the Reds. In fact, I remember very little about that season until the opening of Riverfront and, of course, the All Star game at the new stadium. That was when I really started becoming enamored with baseball and, in particular, with the Reds. I don't have any memories of Crosley Field. I know some of you folks started following the team well before I did and probably attended many a game at old Crosley.

Any memories about Crosley that you would care to share with those who may not know a whole lot about the Reds' former home?

I love this short old clip of Crosley . The video is from June 6, 1970, only a month or so before the Reds moved to Riverfront. The first Reds' game I attended was about a year and a couple months after this Reds / Mets game shown in this video . One thing I love about this video is seeing a young Tom Seaver(RIP) warming up before the game and Nolan Ryan signing autographs. Love seeing Big Klu coaching over at first and the Big Bopper, Lee May, manning first base.

I think ball parks like Crosley had so much character and personality. In some ways, the cookie cutter stadiums like Riverfront , Three Rivers, Veterans were cold and impersonal compared to places like Crosley.

I hope you enjoy the clip. It's only a little over three minutes in length. I appreciate any stories or information you can share with me about this glorious old ballpark.

Good video. Thanks for posting. The only time I remember seeing Crosley was after it was closed. We went by it on I-75 going into Cincinnati. I thought it looked very sad and lonely sitting there waiting on another ballgame to be played that never happened. IIRC, it was used an impound lot for cars for the city and then torn down later. Too bad it couldn't have been saved as a historical landmark or something like that.

Someone tried to sell me some reefer at Crosley.
You are standing at the end of a road before a small brick building. Around you is a forest. A small stream flows out of the building and down a gully.

    Copied from old thread..

The LAST game I saw at Crosley was the double-header when Hank Aaron got his 3000th hit (May 17, 1970). I was a senior in HS and about to graduate in a couple weeks. I took my little brother. It was SRO and we stood the whole first game. I remember Aaron's hit as a 32-hopper up the middle that Concepcion gloved but couldn't make the throw. I didn't even know it was his 3000th hit till they stopped the game and announced it.

I was getting to be quite the longhair hippie at the time (it was 1970 and Kent State was just a couple weeks before with Vietnam war protest at fever pitch). During the second game, I took my little bro to the bathroom. Walking down a Crosley ramp, I was asked "hey man, you want to buy some reefer?". Still being the white 'burb kid at heart, I said "no thank you".

Riverfront opened a few weeks later.
