Nice initial post WOY. Love the analysis.

Main difference for me is how much front office poisoned my passion for this team and it’s possibilities from the jump as opposed to that team where you knew they were trying to win from the outset.
Well, that's what those words mean. He was here. If they don't keep him, he will have been lost/subtracted. I headed out the door today with two shoes on my feet. If I don't return with them, I have lost them. If I do return with them, I haven't added them. ---M2

there was only one wildcard then, as you know. the 1999 reds would have easily made it as the second wildcard and would have had a legit chance at advancing. the 2021 reds aren't even going to make the second wildcard most likely and have zero chance at advancing.

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it a million times: Build a team prepared for 6 months of play or sell the franchise.

this is exactly right. and the 1999 reds did not give their closer away for free before the season ... and then wait 4 months to address the bullpen.

a 96-win team should not be compared to the 2021 reds. i understand to a degree where WOY is coming from, but it's my opinion that the 1999 reds were far better than the 2021 reds.

they were better because the 1999 front office tried to make them better. This 2021 team won what it won in spite of almost vicious planned incompetence from the front office and will probably come up short pretty much in a direct line back to the front office incompetence. It is infuriating.

The Guzman deal was good, cost them BJ Ryan but plugged an obvious hole that appeared when Neagle couldn't pitch and Tomko was stinking it up, the Neagle deal was good but in retrospect he was coming off 66 starts and 450 IP in the prior two seasons so the cost was high for 111 innings (Boone and Remlinger)

But yeah they did try and if the BP this year was addressed sooner than later it might have worked

They also brought in Greg Vaughn and he was with them all year and an absolute monster. You entered that season at least knowing the team was trying to win from front office on down. I just…I don’t think that was at all the case this year from ownership and front office.

They also brought in Mike Cameron that offseason. Underrated player. Speed and great defense, along with some power.

    1999 Reds 96-66
    2021 Reds 75-71

99 was way more fun. The last three weeks have been as miserable as I've been as a Reds fan. The bastards gave me hope and snatched it away, Most years there is just no hope at all.

Cast last year is representative of the Vaughn move, but the CF fail this year screams out for a Cameron move

Really close to being a wash, 3.4 WAR vs Cast 3.0, 4th in MVP, 117 OPS+, Cast is +153

1999 was a huge hitting year, H U G E.. forty three guys had .900 plus OPS, only 13 do in 2021, totally different run environment

The Reds have never replaced Mike Cameron. I suppose Jr.'s first year (before his knees went), but he was a corner OF playing CF for most of his time with the Reds. Cameron could have held down CF for a decade.

Castellanos is easily the better all-around hitter. Vaughn's only got the edge due to his defense, which is mostly the result of Mike Cameron covering his flank. Can't say enough glowing things about Cameron's impact on that team.
