Upcoming Reds Minor League Free Agency: 2021-22 Offseason

2021 MiLB Rule 9 Free Agency is nearly upon us: Rule 9 is for all minor league players who have spent all or any part of at least seven separate seasons on a minor league roster (including all or parts of any season spent on Optional Assignment to the minors while on a MLB 40 man roster and/or on a minor league Injured List) and/or if the player has been previously released or non-tendered in his career and his present contract (known as a "second contract" even if it's his third or fourth minor league contract) has expired. Players do not accrue a minor league season if the player spends the entire season on an MLB Active List, MLB Disabled List(s), and/or other MLB inactive list, or if the player spends an entire season on the Restricted List, Disqualified List, Suspended List, Ineligible List, Voluntarily Retired List, and/or Military List.

A player who ordinarily would have been declared a Rule 9 minor league free-agent is NOT eligible to be a free-agent if the player is either added to an MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) or agrees to a minor league successor contract prior to 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series. I.E. Reiver Sanmartin and Duari Moreta who would have been eligible will no longer be eligible as long as they stay on the 40 man roster.

Though no minor league season was played during 2020 that year will count towards free agency...so any player who has played 2015-2021 will qualify.

At 5 pm EST on the 5th day after the final game of the world series, the following 39 players in the Reds system will automatically become free agents.

    SIX-YEAR Minor League Free Agents:
    SP/RP - Mariot, Michael
    SP/RP - Milone, Tommy
    RP/SP - Adleman, Tim
    RP/SP - Alaniz, Ruben "R.J."
    RP - Duarte, Daniel
    RP/SP - Finnegan, Brandon
    RP/SP - Fulmer, Carson
    RP/SP - Howard, Nick
    RP/SP - Lee, Zach
    1B/LF/RF - Morrison, Logan
    2B/3B/RF - Bell, Brantley
    3B/SS/2B - De Leon, Michael
    3B/2B/SS - Freeman, Mike
    CF/RF/LF - Lee, Braxton
    RF/CF/LF - Cedrola, Lorenzo Carmine
    RF/LF/CF - Crook, Narciso
    RF/LF/CF - Hernandez, Jan
    C - Gale, Rocky
    RP/SP - Baker, Dylan
    RP/SP - Diaz, Alexis
    RP - Lopez, Diomar
    RP/SP - Perez, Hector
    RP/SP - Pinto, Julio
    3B/1B/LF - Tenerowicz, Robbie
    1B/C - Garcia, Wilson
    2B/SS/CF - Rivas, Leonardo
    SP - Romero, Wennington
    RP/SP - Weickel, Walker
    SS/2B/3B - Trahan, Blake
    RP - Hellinger, Sam
    RF/LF/CF - Bautista, Mariel
    SP - Jordan, Andrew
    RP - Hunter, Brian
SP/RP - De Jesus, Jhon Carlos
    RP - Bennett, Connor
    RP/3B/SS - Medina, Fredy
    RP - Sandridge, Jayvien
    C/1B - Gomez, Elvis
    RP/SP - Lindell, Karsen

NOTE: With mutual consent (player & club), a second-contract minor league player who has accrued fewer than seven minor league seasons can be signed to a multi-year minor league contract with club control extending up through the player's seventh minor league season. So it is possible that one or more of the Reds minor league second contract players are signed beyond the 2021 season (I.E. "second contract players" Robbie Tenerowicz, Jayvien Sandridge, etc. who have less than 7 minor league seasons but have been previously released may have signed an unreported multi-year contract with the Reds).

This list is likely to grow before the end of the world series. Though MLB frowns on ballclubs making 40 man moves during the playoffs most teams do in fact make transactions. If a player, say...Delino DeShields is outrighted off the 40 man roster prior to that date he would qualify (in truth, most of the players on the 40 man roster would qualify if outrighted).

Cedrola is the only name on that list I'd be interested enough in keeping to put on the 40-man roster.

(Even then, he's a marginal case.)

The only player on that list that the Reds should think about adding to the 40 man roster is Alexis Diaz, he turns 25 this week - has a 15 K/9 and a .198 BAVGA while only allowing 2 longballs in 35 AA games this season.

If they want to keep Cedrola they can re-sign him to a new minor league contract.

You may add C Beau Taylor to the list, he was outrighted to Louisville after clearing waivers. He'll be a minor league free agent after the world series.

Does anyone know why Connor Bennett is on the restricted list? His strikeout numbers made him an intriguing prospect.

I think he failed to report to spring camps.

    Nowhere to put this…

Regis: How many players still smoke heaters? Left a Chattanooga Lookouts game last year after fireworks and saw half the infield chaining a pack of American Spirit Yellows outside the clubhouse. By the way, beautiful yard right on the river. Would recommend
