On Tuesday September 28, for the Reds to make the playoffs, the Reds needed to win 5 straight and the Cards lose 6 straight. How did they give up at the beginning of September? Sure, the offense looked listless, and Bell's constant platooning was annoying: 4 pinch hitters in what, the fourth inning? But at least he was trying.
You're in the last week of the season and you still have a chance to make the playoffs. When would you have given up?

Yes exactly! Every game was an urgent must win game to get to the next urgent must win game, and so on. And that's a pretty exciting possibility for a Reds fan.

The odds were greater than zero. Duh. It could happen. But I’d say the odds were like 1-5%. And I’m being generous. It just wasn’t going to happen man.
