On Tuesday September 28, for the Reds to make the playoffs, the Reds needed to win 5 straight and the Cards lose 6 straight. I suspect the probability of this happening was probably greater than the Cards winning 17 in a row. But regardless, the probability was GREATER THAN ZERO.

And to win 5 straight, they had to start by winning the first one, but instead brought up the rook.

How did they give up at the beginning of September? Sure, the offense looked listless, and Bell's constant platooning was annoying: 4 pinch hitters in what, the fourth inning? But at least he was trying.

You're in the last week of the season and you still have a chance to make the playoffs. When would you have given up?

Yes exactly! Every game was an urgent must win game to get to the next urgent must win game, and so on. And that's a pretty exciting possibility for a Reds fan.

But you had already pulled the plug?

The odds were greater than zero. Duh. It could happen. But I’d say the odds were like 1-5%. And I’m being generous. It just wasn’t going to happen man.
