encouraging news from Jon Heyman, if only because it signals that the Reds intend on improving the team this offseason.

Nick Castellanos will obviously opt out of his deal with $34M and 2 years to go. Still only 29, he posted a .939 OPS for the Reds this year. The Reds do have interest in retaining him following his All-Star season.

“We wanted to improve the bullpen but bringing Nick back really hamstrung the payroll.”

I'm trying to remember a time when a good player was leaving the Reds and the Reds did not say "we are interested in bringing him back"
Sure, they're interested in bringing him back at their price, but not market rate.
I mean, I get it, they have to put on the facade of caring, but that tweet gives me no confidence.
Remember last season when "the number one priority is finding a SS"? That didn't really result in anything.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

Edwin Uceta is now on waivers, has two option years remaining, someone should grab him - Reds still have dead weight on the 40 man.

How about FA Kwang-hyun Kim from the Cards as a LH BP option?

I like the idea of trading for Ian Happ, since the Cubs aren't exactly going to contend for a few years yet. A package of lower level prospects might get it done.

What is it we like about Ian Happ? He's basically Tyler Naquin and will cost the same except we'll need to send prospects to acquire him. Only one of thise guys can play RF and neither of them should be in Center. Happ is a switch hitter but doesn't hit lefty pitching any better than a LH hitter does. I'd just keep Naquin and pass on Happ.

I’ve mentioned Happ as a trade target a few times. You’re right, there are a few similarities between he and Naquin, but I think I’d prefer Happ. He’s younger so you hope there’s a bit more upside there than you have with Naquin. Plus he’s not had the injury issues Naquin has. I also think we just saw Naquin’s career year so if you can deal him and then go get Happ I believe that’s a net gain.

Make no mistake, I’m not in favor of dealing away highly-regarded prospects for Happ, but I don’t think you’ll have to dip into any of the Top 10 prospects to make it happen.

Sure if you can get him for somebody like alejo Lopez and riley O'Brien, get him, but the Reds need a CF option and he's not it.

Happ is arb eligible and coming off a good year where he made $4.1 Million. He'll cost around $7 Million next year I'd guess. Naquin made $1 Million last year and may cost less in arb. I'd prefer a Naquin/Senzel platoon in RF, probably ata combined cost for less than Happ's cost and use teh moeny on CF where it's really needed.

If they add him the Reds would no longer have to run out a happless lineup. With Happ having gone full Bill Hall, not facing him would be worth 3 wins even if he Asdrubals for the Reds.

    Jon Heyman @JonHeyman 14m
Nick Castellanos opts out. Castellanos, 29, had .309/.362/.576 slash line this year. Had $34M and 2 years to go. Now a free agent. #reds
