Getting? This FO regime would’ve been ran out of town 2 years ago in about 25 other markets. There’s just zero expectation and acceptance of awful to mediocre

The Reds had winning records the last two seasons and went to the post season in one of them.

The #Reds declined the conditional option to extend Justin Wilson's contract through the 2023 season.

    .
So this means that Wilson is gone after 2022? Not complaining, just making sure I read that right.
If true, the Reds must not have a lot of faith in the guy to decline having him at min salary 2023

There has to be more to this. Why wouldn't they keep him at the minimum? If he's terrible they can just release him. Make no sense to me.

Welcome to the new Cincinnati Reds Baseball Ops.
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.

    According to Cot's his contract would be the MLB minimum + $500k + $100k bonuses at 40, 45, 50, 55 & 60 games

Still doesn't seem like a whole lot of $ to risk but it would be more than the minimum

In order to get him at league minimum for 2022, they needed to pick up his 2023 option which is $7.5M. So it would mean having him for two years at $8M total.

That's the more I was looking for. Now it makes sense.

This is incorrect. Either Nightengale is confused or the way the contract was initially reported was wrong.

You are correct, I am wrong, I got the player and team options mixed up. What Cy Seymour posted is correct.

    My apologies.

I think the one thing we all forget about the Reds is that they're paralyzingly fearful of any risk. If a move is risky, they won't take it. And that's a recipe for this mediocre garbage we're getting each season.

It seems the only risks this franchise will accept involve retaining their own players (Bailey, Votto, Suarez etc.). But you're right, they seem to shy away from risk-taking when it involves changing the status quo, especially when the current status quo is on the downside, which is alarming, IMO.

Two years ago they went out and spent huge cash on Moose, Shogo, Cast and Miley. That doesn’t seem risk adverse to me. Hell, the risk of 2 of those contracts has bit them. Shogo performance wise and Moose injury wise.

As I stated in another thread, that particular offseason spending spree was an outlier and a directive from ownership (in this case, Cast, IMO) following the botched rebuild. It's not something we should expect on even a semi regular basis moving forward.

In other words, Dan 's main point about risk aversion still stands, IMO.

Cueto is now a free agent, middle relief would look good on him
