1964. The Cardinals and Yankees were underachieving. The Cards had already fired their GM Bing Devine and Busch was talked out of firing manager Johnny Keane and replacing him with Leo Durocher because it didn't look good firing the GM and the manager mid-season. Yogi was in his first - and last - season with the Yankees. Both teams got hot in September and wound up facing each other in the World Series. The Yankees already made the decision to fire Yogi and wanted to hire Keane. Keane was all for it but they waited till after the Series to announce it. Meanwhile after the Cards beat the Yankees Yogi was fired and the Cards wanted to re-sign Keane to an extension and called a press conference to announce it. Right before it started, Keane gave Busch a letter of resignation he wrote in September and went on to manage the Yankees for a little over a year.
