It actually sounds like it had nothing to do with Fickell’s integrity. Every report is the players and recruits were pushing hard for Freeman. Sounds like there would have been a mass exodus if they hired Fick.

However it worked out, Fickell hasn't really been involved in this cycle of the coaching carousel, and he HAS to be at or near the top of everyone's list. If he doesn't make a move until after UC is eliminated from the playoffs (whether by Houston, the Committee or in an actual playoff game), I think it speaks volumes about the guy.

At this point I think Fickell is going to stay at UC until Ryan Day either gets fired or leaves for the NFL.

    1) The Domers are going nuts over Freeman. They love him. It sure feels like he was their first choice.

    2) Fickell may want to coach at OSU but I can’t say I want him there. Maybe I’m a bad person but a successful CFB coach of a top-tier program needs to be able to get his hands dirty a bit in the recruiting game and I don’t know that I see that from Luke. I’m not asking for NCAA violations, but you have to compete with the Sabans, Fishers, Harbaughs etc at their own game. Maybe Fickell is not a choirboy but he sure seems like one.

Re Freeman. I think he has the potential to be a very good head coach. He is one heck of a recruiter, and has pulled some guys to ND who seemed like guys OSU gets. He will cause headaches in the midwest for OSU with his recruiting.

That said, I think its a big risk. He has one season as a Power 5 D coordinator, and really one season as the head play caller on defense. Very few people have made the rapid jump he made. It isn't all that uncommon to go from OC/DC to HC at a power 5 (Day and Riley did it) but both had a longer track record. I knew Freeman was a rising star on the coaching scene, however, you never heard his name mentioned as DC in the game.

I don't see Fickell going to Oklahoma. I'd be shocked. I did think he'd go to ND and who knows what happened there. Happy Fick is still here and I hope he sticks around for many years. He's built quite the powerhouse program.

That said, I'm happy for Freeman. Loved him here at Cincy and he was great for a year at ND. ND upgraded imo.

I’m old. It doesn’t seem that long ago I saw Freeman play high school ball at Huber Heights Wayne. He was one of those kind of HS players that was a man amongst boys. Just destroyed the opposition.

I think Freeman will succeed if ND is just a smidge patient. The team definitely has his back which I never felt like Kelly did. But Freeman has never been a head coach at any of his stops so that will take some time for him to sort out. I’m pulling for him though and I’m not an ND fan.

I think Kelly is a bit of a D, however, that’s quite the statement saying they upgraded. Kelly is the winningest coach in ND history, just overtook some guy named Newt Rockney, Nuke Rockman, idk, my dad keeps telling me he surpassed a legendary ND coach.

    (That was a joke)

Agreed on the D part. (See his new southern accent)

But the man has won at D2 and Low, Middle and Upper-Tier DI.

Why isn’t he a slam dunk hire for LSU? (Rhetorical…not to you) I think he is. The culture thing will come to be overrated.

    Still a D though.

I know bailing on your team before the biggest game of their entire lives is part of the "coaching business", but I can't help but appreciate the guys who don't abandon their men. BK has done it, what, three times now? Good for him, but I can't help but hate the dude because of it.

I think the SEC will chew him up and spit him out. But that's just me. LOL

I don't care much for him either.

I doubt Kelly lasts 3 years at LSU.

He's getting a lot of grief for trying a fake Cajun accent when he was speaking to the LSU basketball crowd the other night. He's a phony. But to be fair, I'd say 95% of college football coaches are cut from the same cloth.

Kelly is the winningest coach in the same way that JT Barrett holds most of the passing records at OSU. There hasn't been a single season that he as been at ND when someone would have though the team to be elite, championship caliber.

Kelly will win there because that is what he does. The question is, will he win enough and how long will he last.
