Lol at the Reds for even agreeing to a contract like that.
Agreed, they could have just not had him the last two years and been worse. I truly don’t understand this take.

    Re: Castellanos opts out

It's going to be interesting to see what he commands on the open market especially without a new CB agreement and the possibility of a work stoppage coming. Every team has a robust analytics department and it doesn't take that to see he still has major holes in his defense as well as an away OPS of .772 and .756 the last 2 years. Best of luck to him though as he was great last year but I suspect he is only going to get a couple million more a year and perhaps an extra year or 2 in a contract.

He'll get something like 4/80 (or more) from somebody. Pretty sure it won't be the Reds.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

You mean the guy that finished 5th in the NL in OPS, one-thousandth of a point behind Castellanos?

That's what I was thinking...his ceiling is probably 5/$100M although I would still take the under on that.

Didn't we just do this? Why people continue to want to watch a loser baffles me. It is getting real old.

If he's really going to make $20 million a year, couldn't the Reds can afford him? That's only $2 million over the QO. That's only $3 million more than he was making already, so the raise could be covered by the Tucker money, and the extra years could be covered by the Votto money.

Yeah. OF/DH bats are scarce. He won't hit the jackpot but there will be teams looking for a guy with the hit tools and intensity/attitude/leadership of Castellanos.

He'll be missed. Reds have an opportunity to remake their outfield this offseason. I'm not confident that'll happen.

We knew this was coming. Now we find out how much our ownership values a player like Nick. The city loves him. Players love him. You do whatever needs to be done to match his best offer, and let chips fall where they may

    Now trade Senzel for Barnhart.

Then you can have Winker in left, Barnhart in right, and Votto in center.

    It's all coming together.

Could they? Yes. Would they give him 4 years? I doubt it.

Consider, they have ~$82M in guaranteed contracts, ~$33M in expected arb eligible players, ~$9M in pre-arb salaries (and $2M for guys on the 40 man). That's $126M.

I don't think the final 2022 payroll is going to be north of $130M. It could be sub-$120M. They only world in which they retain Castellanos is one where they manage to move Moose and/or Suarez AND no other teams go further than is reasonable*.

The "problem" with playing in FA is that the winning bidder, basically by definition, is willing to pay more than anybody else -- making it often the case that they are overpaying. So if you're not willing to "overpay", you won't get many desirable players. Nothing Nick Krall has said suggests that's on the table right now.

Get some more well rounded players who win battles on both sides of the ball would be my mantra, of course the Reds would insert something gross and defeating about budget in theirs
