I don't like the idea of moving Barrero around either. I'd play him at SS, teach Farmer how to play LF when Winker sits (surely he can play it as well as Winker), platoon Friedl and Senzel in CF (hopefully, in the process, saving Senzel's fragility a little), and platoon Naquin and some X to be acquired in right. If that guy in right can also play some infield, it's ideal as to roster space. There are three guys who can go from infield to outfield and vice versa without budging Barrero off SS.

I guess we just disagree at the ability of Farmer to suddenly be a passable OFer. But it would be fitting for the cheapness and lack of planning by the Reds.

Barrero should be the SS for the next decade. Find someone else to play CF.

Absolutely bonkers if they move Barrero to CF just so Kyle Farmer can play another year at SS.

I like the idea of Farmer getting reps in LF. He should absolutely start somewhere vs. LHP - 1B, 3B, LF, DH, even occasional starts at SS and C. But Farmer is ideal as a platoon utility who can capably fill-in for longer stretches due to injury.

I expect Barrero to play both OF and shortstop next season.

Doubtful they’ll spend on new starting caliber OFers so they’ll mix and match quite a bit. Barrero in the OF has the advantage of good defense, so he’ll likely be part of the mix.

They don’t have to decide on a permanent position for him yet. They may want to see how McClain does defensively at short and in the OF.

Not an endorsement, just a prediction, but I am rather certain that the 2022 Reds will have Senzel starting in CF.

I am less certain, but still predicting that RF will be a Naquin/Aquino platoon and Farmer will be the starting SS with Barrero starting the season either in AAA or as a utility player.

I hope you're wrong on Aquino, on Farmer, and on Barrero. It's time to go with Barrero at SS, Farmer in a utility role, including LF, and Aquino on somebody else's roster.

I agree with all of this, but I just don't think ts going to happen. Path of least resistence is the Reds Way. Barrero has already shown positive signs in CF so I think he's it with Shogo probably spotting in there some days. Naquin (if they don't non-tender him) will split RF with Senzel. Using Senzel as a platoon guy against lefty pitching will be the way to try to keep him healthy. I expect 300 PAs from him. Farmer is now the established SS and my guess is he's the guy this year. If Naquin is non-tendered, Senzel will split time with Friedl or Schrock out there in RF with Senzel playing agsinst LHP and some RHP until he ends up on th DL agains. I think Aquino may be non-tendered, but he'll still be cheap, so he may stick around.

If he's healthy and not traded, I suspect you're right.

Senzel in CF, Barrero at SS, Farmer as a utlity guy who should be a C/ backup SS.

I'd guess Naquin in RF at the moment, though it's entirely possible Cincinnati will nontender him to save cash.

I don't think Aquino will be with the Reds. I'd like to see them deal him to Pittsburgh, Colorado, or Baltimore before the nontender deadline for a relief arm as a scratch-off lottery ticket. (Win-win deal for all squads, IMO.)

The Reds have four genuine starting position players. Votto, India, Winker and Stephenson. And Winker has never played more than 113 games. And Stephenson is a catcher which by definition involves some split time.

Suarez is far from a sure thing at third, SS, CF, RF up in the air.

When you add in injuries, the availability of the DH, I see a team with much platooning, position sharing, switching around. I don’t think it’s “he’s the shortstop, he’s the CFer.”

Me - I would emphasize youth and aim for 2023-24. But I see the Reds straddling the fence between now and the future with an unsettled lineup much of the year.

IMO, as soon as they let Miley go, they started "rebuilding". I think any kid in the organization with promise is going to get a lot of chances and a lot of playing time. Case in point.. Aquino. Aquino is not likely to amount to anything, but he's cheap, so he will probably be kept for next year.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

I'm still not convinced he'll hit enough to play either. Long swing and hasn't shown he's capable of making adjustments.

    I hope I'm wrong.

I think it's inevitable that Castillo is traded this offseason, with the Angels being a likely suitor. So with that in mind:

    Reds trade: Castillo

Angels trade: Brandon Marsh(CF) Sam Bachman(RHP) (AA) their #2 prospect and MLB #87 , and Jaremiah Jackson(SS) (A) their #5 prospect

Angels get a solid 1/2 guy at the top of their rotation, while the reds get a true CF/Leadoff guy, and a nice pitching prospect in Bachman, while getting a solid MI prospect to boot.

I woud not be happy to see Castillo traded, but I think that is the type of return we should expect and would be OK with that as the return. I think some of these top end guys like Kelenic and Adell that people are throwing out there just aren't going to happen. I'd actually be surprised if the Reds could get all three of those guys in a deal.

    Jon Morosi @jonmorosi

Sources: #Rangers still working to upgrade their starting rotation after the big signings of Semien and Seager. They've inquired to the #Reds about trading for one of their starting pitchers (Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray, or Tyler Mahle). @MLB @MLBNetwork
Still not really in favor of this but it does at seem like a good sign that the entire AL West are among those interested in these guys.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”
