Dave Frishberg died - Schoolhouse Rock & more

Jazz pianist Dave Frishberg died this week. For those of you who are younger, you'll know his work from Schoolhouse Rock. But for hardcore baseball fans, he's the writer that immortalized Van Lingle Mungo.

One of my favorites… Witty songs like “My Attorney Bernie” and “I’m Hip”, and great ballads like “Sweet Kentucky Ham” and “You Are There”. I’ve heard that “You Are There” isn’t performed often because any singer who has suffered a loss in their life is unable to make it through the song without crying.

But most of his songs are really funny and clever. Do yourself a favor and check them out.

Born in St. Paul, Minn. Graduated from Central High School. Van Lingle Mungo is a classic.
When ill health overtook him late in life, he never stopped writing, just as he had mordantly predicted in 1981 in “My Swan Song”:

Once I popped them out like waffles
The good ones and the awfuls
A new one every day. But now
I find I’m uninspired, my wig’s no longer wired
I’ve nothing left to say. …
    But I’ll say it anyway.
