Do we know details of the Reds current TV Media Deal?

The deal signed a few years ago. Details are confidential and hard to find when I searched a few times over the last couple of years

I believe the deal is in the $40-50M a year + equity stake in a range similar to the Padres, Orioles and Twins. Higher than Cleveland, Milwaukee and Pittsburgh. An upgrade from the $15-20M per year before.

    Anyone have insight?

Terms of the deal weren't spelled out in great detail, but it's safe to say they'll be getting a sizable yearly increase over that $30 million mark. Of course, Castellini later revealed that the Reds had taken a minority ownership stake in FS-Ohio, which means the overall monetary benefit for the team's owners won't only come in cash flow.

This seems to be a closely guarded secret. It should be very large since the Reds are one of the highest rated MLB teams year in and year out. (5.16 Nielson rating in 2019)
It reaches one of the largest number of TVs also because it is in ohio/kentucky/Indiana where there is heavy population and people love baseball in the region. This is why calling the Reds small market is a mistake.

The Reds want to make you think they are poor so that they can maintain their profits. The Padres had a 179M payroll last year and are projected at 185M so far this year according to sport trac so i think the Reds can afford more than the 125M they spent last year.

The deal is more likely in the 70-90M range

It's definitely not in the $70-90M per year range.

Ohio is split with the Indians, Indiana is split with the Cubs/Cardinals/Reds and the primary local markets are Cincinnati, Dayton and Lexington. I assume some level of adder for a portion of Louisville, WV, Columbus and Southern Indiana/Indianapolis. The Reds DMA is #29 only ahead of Milwaukee due to Cincinnati being surrounded by TV Markets at close range in all direction.

This blog estimates the new deal is in the ~50M per year range which would place the Reds between #20-22

Maybe you want to check out the Padres payrolls before 2020 when they entered a playoff window and had to pony up for the Tatis and Machado mega contracts. They've entered an area they soon won't be able to afford much longer...

The Reds spent like drunken sailors compared to the San Diego Padres throughout the last decade+ who were in the bottom five MLB payroll list 7 of 12 years and only in the top 20 at #17 for just one year (2016)

    Padres Payrolls and Ranks;
    2019: 74M (#24)
    2018: 96M (#25)
    2017: 71M (#28)
    2016: 113M (#17)
    2015 101M (#22)
    2014: 90M (#21)
    2013: 67M (#26)
    2012: 55M (#30, dead last...)
    2011: 46M (#29)
    2010: 38M (#30, dead last...)
    2009: $43M (#29)

That is just a guess man I have seen others at higher levels because of higher ratings. Ratings and eyeballs drive what you get in these contracts and the reds get a much higher viewership

Their deal might not mean much when Sinclair files for bankruptcy. There was a recent article from The Athletic about the regional sports networks owned by Sinclair, and how a reckoning day is coming soon.

If they tell you what they are getting you might get mad at what they are spending on the team

All we know is the Reds in the Cast led ownership era have spent much more than their market size and TV market dictates. Go check the Lindner years and you'll see plenty of bottom 5 and bottom 25% payroll years. That was awful.

They have spent far more on MLB payroll than the Cinci market justifies in the Cast era, but have simply not gotten the on field results outside 2010-2013 which was driven by home grown pitching talent much more than Free Agency.

It is a money issue as the slower growing and smaller Cinci market is falling behind a dozen+ fast growing west and sunbelt markets by the year. But moreso a development and organizational issue. They need to learn best practices from the Rays, Brewers, Indians and A's all of whom have spent much much less than the Reds over the past 15 years. Other than the current pitching coach don't think they've ever reached much into those four organizations for front office, development and coachng personnel.

Sinclair won't be declaring bankruptcy. It would be Sinclair's subsidiary, Diamond Sports, that would declare bankruptcy.

2013 was the change, so most of those years are with the current ownership.

The Padres have taken on some horrendous contracts with zero to show for it this season.

They are sitting at a $200M committed payroll and that's with Tatis backloaded contract being a bargain $6M hit for 2022. Not even in the top 10 committed contracts. Eric Hosmer at $23M egad...

They will soon be cutting costs in a big way depending on the CBA terms
