On Tuesday, January 25th, the BBWAA will announce the results of its 2022 Hall of Fame balloting. Any electees will be inducted on Sunday, July 24th, at 1:30 p.m. at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown.

^The Class of 2022 Era Committee electees, which features Bud Fowler, Buck O'Neil, Jim Kaat, Tony Oliva, Gil Hodges, and Minnie Miñoso, will also be inducted that day.

Any candidate who receives votes on 75 percent of all ballots cast will earn election to the Hall of Fame. Those who receive fewer than 5 percent of all ballots cast (or whom have been on the ballot for 10 years) will fall off next years' ballot.

Seventeen former players are returning to the 2022 BBWAA ballot after receiving at least five percent of the overall vote in 2021:

    Curt Schilling
    Barry Bonds
    Roger Clemens
    Scott Rolen
    Omar Vizquel
    Billy Wagner
    Todd Helton
    Gary Sheffield
    Andruw Jones
    Jeff Kent
    Manny Ramirez
    Sammy Sosa
    Andy Pettitte
    Mark Buehrle
    Torii Hunter
    Bobby Abreu
    Tim Hudson

Thirteen additional players will be making their BBWAA Hall of Fame ballot debut in 2022:

    Carl Crawford
    Prince Fielder
    Ryan Howard
    Tim Lincecum
    Justin Morneau
    Joe Nathan
    David Ortiz
    Jonathan Papelbon
    Jake Peavy
    A.J. Pierzynski
    Alex Rodriguez
    Jimmy Rollins
    Mark Teixeira

(The following thirteen players also qualified for the final ballot this year for the first time; but they weren't selected by the screening committee for the full BBWAA vote: Michael Bourn, Billy Butler, Marlon Byrd, Coco Crisp, Jeff Francoeur, Omar Infante, Colby Lewis, Kyle Lohse, Javier Lopez, Angel Pagan, Matt Thornton, Juan Uribe, and Ryan Vogelsong.)

So...I plan to play Nostradamus again this year - a day before the final vote I'll predict the final BBWAA vote.

Between now and then, I'll simply go with a quick guess....that no player gets inducted again this year - and this summer we'll watch Kaat and Oliva get inducted (assuming they don't pass between now and then - they are both 83 years young). That means Schilling, Clemens, Bonds, and Sosa would be relegated to the era committees to get inducted as this is their 10th and final time on the writers ballot.

Re: RedsZone's 2022 BBWAA HOF Ballot Vote

I voted for Bonds and Clemons this year, their final year. (not that I have any real say in the vote) I do believe they would have made it if they hadn't juiced it up. But since they did I waited until the final year to vote for them just so they would twist in the wind as long as possible. I'm doing the same treatment to ARod.

You are probably correct. Schilling should have been inducted years ago. Rolen is deserving of induction. I'd also probably vote for Clemens, Bonds, Sosa and Sheffield, despite the PEDs allegations; each one was a great player and MLB allowed and prospered from PEDs use.

Perhaps them leaving out Bonds, Clemens and Schilling would lead to the HOF changing how entry is granted. Too many offensively stupid people casting votes as illustrated on NotMrTibbs' twitter account every year.

Makes me sad and old to already see Matt Cain on the 2023 list. I pimped him as a future HOFer many times a while back. Though he was gonna be a horse.

Kinda in the Verlander mold…ironic since Verlander is incorrectly on that list. (He’s pitching this year)

    Jeff Kent and Scott Rolen.

I'd vote for Ortiz in his second year (DH isn't worthy of a first year vote, imho)--and I do realize he had the one leaked positive ped test, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt -which I'm not giving the others (I can't really justify it, so I'm not going to debate it).

The others with the good numbers are either pedded or are Curt Schilling. Not worthy of the HOF (at least until Joe Jackson gets in).

Until Verlander officially plays in another MLB game he'll remain on the 2026 eligible list.

Apologies if you wrote and did all that as it looked so good it seemed like a cut and paste job.

Re: RedsZone's 2022 BBWAA HOF Ballot Vote

More is lost by keeping Bonds, Clemens, A-Rod, etc. from the HOF on the basis of their steroid use than is gained by keeping them out. History won't look on their careers as any lesser for having not been elected. Their statistics still count and their greatness as players still broadly recognized and appropriately caveated. However, by their absence they will maintain their place taking up an outsized part of the HOF conversation. Falling off the ballot will not remove them from the conversation nearly as much as electing them would.

Don't let them speak at the inauguration ceremony. Put an asterisk on their plaque denoted them as having been caught cheating and/or implicated in the steroid era. Put them in a special Hall of Shame wing for all I care. But elect them for the sake of posterity, for properly telling the story of the era, and let us move on from it.

For the record, I'm a big Hall guy and I voted:

    *** No Brainer
    ** Confident
    * Could be convinced otherwise

    Bonds ***
    Clemens ***
    Kent *
Ortiz * (strong historical narrative value)
    Manny **
    Pettite **
    A-Rod ***
    Rolen **
    Schilling ***
    Sheffield *

    Under future consideration
Wagner * (I personally think closers are overrated, but if the broader community will elect them, he needs to be in)
    Abreu *
    Jones *
    Sosa *

Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
