    Satellite Internet

Anyone have experience with satellite internet? I'm heading back to the woods for January and February, but this time I need internet. I'm about 2000 feet from the road, but there is no DSL or cable there anyway, so satellite is my only option.

I don't care about streaming or movies or any of that stuff. I just need access for when I'm doing support at work or when I'm researching something. Probably Teamviewer would be the biggest resource hog I expect to use.

I've asked everyone I know, but no one has seen it or tried it. I've read experiences, but I thought maybe someone uses it at a camp or out in eastern Ohio or something.

My father-in-law's only serviceable option on his rural Kentucky farm was Tesla's Starlink, and he's been really happy with it.

Consider using a hot spot. I'd suggest either AT&T or Cricket. If it's in a zone where you can get AT&T bars (Cricket uses AT&T towers) it'll work. This is what I use at my cottage in Michigan

Doesn't that need a dish and have installation costs?

Damn, that looks really nice, but I’ll be above the max Latitude. It won’t be available in my area until summer of 22. I’ll check out Hughesnet next I guess.

OK, that’s a bit pricey, but renting the orange football for two months at 60 bucks a day isn’t that bad. Plus, there’s nothing to set up, and it just works out of the box.

Plus, I could freak people out big-time by opening that thing up in a diner and start speaking a foreign language and pretending to be Jack Ryan.

I’ll give them a call and see if it works at my location, but they specifically say it works anywhere in the world.

last time I checked the waiting list for beta testing with Starlink was nearly a year long.

I had satellite internet for years in rural Kentucky, and it wasn't awesome.

Lots of slow-down, lots of network lost.

In my old job, we kept our eyes open for new technologies. I don’t know if this technology ever took off, but the is BPL (Broadband over Power Lines). It’s just what it says, it uses existing power lines for broadband access.

No, the power lines are 2000 feet away too, and I'll never tie into the grid. Technically I could run a cable or DSL line that far, but those services aren't available either. Many rural areas are still years away from having services like this. And, it isn't even that rural- I have a view of the ocean, and Bar Harbor is less than an hour away.

I'll build a house there the year after next, and hopefully the Tesla system will be available, but for the two months I need it now, I'll use that Orange Football thing.

Did you end up using the Orange Football thing?

Yes, it worked as advertised. I wouldn’t recommend it for a family at a remote campsite where all the kids are watching movies, but for my purposes it was perfectly fine.
