    My guess is that he was influenced by Hunter S. Thompson who was becoming very popular by then. It's understandable since he was a young guy and probably wanted to emulate HST. That notwithstanding, there was a lot of good stuff in that book. Another book like that was "Class A: Baseball in the Middle of Everywhere" by Lucas Mann. It's not as blatant as Shropshire's book was but this guy is on the beat of the Clinton (IA) Lumberjacks. It's good but he also inserts himself in the story frequently.

    I'm on a fun one now titled Redleg Memories: The Reds of the Fifties and Sixties by Reds historian Greg Rhodes. A little before my time, so I'm enjoying diving into an interesting period in Reds history. The mashers of the late '50s, the '61 pennant, building the pieces of the BRM, and the end of Crosley Field. Rhodes gives each season a chapter and highlights not only stats and scores but a lot of great personal stories from the characters of that era.

    The only negative is the book is shockingly littered with typos. It's almost like I got an unedited first draft.
    "In our sundown perambulations of late, through the outer parts of Brooklyn, we have observed several parties of youngsters playing 'base', a certain game of ball. Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our close rooms, the game of ball is glorious"

    Read every Jay Johnstone book ever printed, but be certain not to miss Over the Edge.

    Recently went back and re-read The Summer Game by Roger Angell. Excellent book about the period between about 1962 to 1971. It is basically a collection of his baseball articles he wrote for The New Yorker during that period. It is a bit heavy on the New York teams, especially the Mets, but it is a must read for any baseball fan. I am going to re-read his next two in the coming months also. Just really terrific writing about the sport.

    The Grandest Stage
    A HISTORY OF THE WORLD SERIES
    By Tyler Kepner

    Mike Ferrin
    @Mike_Ferrin

    Halfway through this and it’s really great. The way Tyler weaves the interviews, from countless World Series stars, into this story makes for a wonderful read.

    Andy Martino
    @martinonyc

    @TylerKepner reminds me of Roger Angell. Both write about the game in a way that re-ignites my love for it.

    Tyler wrote a book on pitching a couple years ago that is very good. Tyler though is no way like Roger. Roger was in love with the fabric of the me and the people, fans, owners, players, scouts. Tyler is more into the nuances of the game and the events it generates.
