December 29, 2002: Riverfront Stadium is demolished in front of more than 25,000 spectators in just 37 seconds. #RedsVault

Not a remarkable stadium, but a lot of history. I know I have a lot of memories from there. The old girl gets flattened.

Done w/ stunning proficiency. It definitely feels like leaving the era of the BRM behind.

Inexcusable. It would still be a perfectly viable venue today.

I guess it depends on your definition of "viable." Would it have structural problems making it unsafe to occupy? Almost definitely not. Could a big league team play in it? Also definitely not.

It's weird to think that if we used the same timeline, GABP would be demolished in 13 years.

If that’s the case good riddance. I always thought GABP looked like plastic generic crap.

The county funded multi-use stadium of the 60's and 70's wasn't prepared for the long haul. A stadium that is built for one sport is more likely to survive the years

Reading this story, I didn’t realize that playing the All Star game at Riverfront in 1970 was in jeopardy for a while.

Spring of 1970 was a tumultuous time politically with the Viet Nam war and that dominated the headlines. Kent State shootings and all that. Plus Roy Tucker was graduating from high school.

It'll be sooner thatn that. Then the replacement for what follows wikl last half as long. At some point they will be tearing down stadiums as they are being built.

I was 3 at the time. But I do remember 15-20 years ago reading a similar article.

I personally wish we still had Riverfront Stadium. GABP is like a teething ring with animal prints on it.
