    Reds sign Ben Lively

    https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/...nors-deal.html

The Reds have signed right-hander Ben Lively to a minor league deal. Lively, who’s seen action in parts of three big-league seasons, returns to the organization that drafted him out of UCF in the fourth round of the 2013 draft before shipping him to the Phillies in exchange for Marlon Byrd following the 2014 season. The deal includes an invitation to spring training.
Two months after a June 2019 trade to the Diamondbacks 2019 season (for whom he never appeared in a big-league game), Lively crossed the Pacific to pitch for the KBO’s Samsung Lions, for whom he also posted solid-if-unspectacular numbers. In parts of three seasons in South Korea, the righty recorded a 4.14 ERA in 202 1/3 innings across 36 starts before a shoulder injury cut his 2021 season short.
As little else has ben going on, I expect a lively discussion.
“The guys we've had for the most part have been serviceable at this level.”

Lively was one of two non-roster additions to camp, along with minor league center fielder Lorenzo Cedrola.

Center fielder Lorenzo Cedrola is another non-roster invitee to spring training. He spent most of last season at Double-A Chattanooga, hitting .320 with 9 homers, 16 doubles, 7 triples and 61 RBI in 106 games.

Hey, one for RTG (Lively) and one for me (Cedrola).
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Cedrola's unlikely to make this season's roster, but this is a pretty high vote of confidence, IMO, for him in Cincinnati for 2024.

Has the Rule 5 draft been cancelled for good this year? Cedrola was a player I thought might be at risk.

It comes with his new minor league contract he just signed, really means nothing.

He was a free agent at the time.

Now it's official. The Reds won the Marlon Byrd trade.

    Re: Reds sign Ben Lively

    On Lively:

    - If he makes the team, it'll almost assuredly be as a BOR innings eater 5th starter guy. If so, he projects to be replacement level.

    - He's not been tried in relief. I find that interesting. He throws four or five pitches, all of them adequately. In relief, perhaps he can focus on a couple of them to provide some real value?

    - If Lively doesn't make the team, he might well be a AAA placeholder that allows Hunter Greene to take that 5th starter spot. Too, I could absolutely see the Reds begin the season with Lively in the rotation to give them an extra season of Greene (should the CBA not fix that issue).

    - Conversely, a Lively/ Sanmartin 5th starter piggyback might be interesting. Neither pitcher profiles as more than adequate and both have multiple pitches. They're right side, port side as a duo. Might be hard for opposing squads to adjust in limited innings. If Castillo/ Gray/ Mahle is/are dealt and little comes back, this is a possible approach.

    - Speaking of tanking, if all three Red SP stalwarts are dealt without recompense, Lively becomes an innings eater in the Larry Leubbers/ Colin Rea/ Jeff Locke mold-- might pull out one pretty solid season when everything's working together, but most likely, not.

I remember you being furious at the trade for Byrd. You really liked Lively.
