Jose Barrero and Vlad Gutierrez made it last season. Both were high profile international signees.

Former Red international signees include Jose Siri, Raisel Iglesias, Johnny Cueto, and Aroldis Chapman.

    Thanks

I thought Iglesias and Chapman were somehow in a different category than the very young guys, but forgot about the others. My bad

I appreciate all the info and discussion topics you bring here

    No worries.

I enjoy the minor league forum nearly as much, I think, as the major league one.

Doug Gray, in his site, says he could see an argument for Cabrera at #8.

I'm not that high on him yet. (He still has to translate those skills to production.)

Right now, I'd rank the following above him:

    1. Greene
    2. Lodolo
    3. Barrero
    4. Ashcraft
    5. De La Cruz
    6. Allen
    7. McLain
    8. Hendrick
    9. Hinds
    10. Calihan
    11. Bonnin
    12. Roa

I'd have to really think about the next tier-- Ivan Johnson, Jose Torres, Daniel Vellojin-- as well. Professional production matters.

That next grouping-- Mat Nelson, Andrew Abbott, Thomas Farr, and others, including several young guys who profile in Complex or Low A ball and recent draftees without an obvious carrying tool-- would be a logical place to place him, though.

So I'd go just after 15, within the top 25.

(And that completely ignores the argument of closeness to the majors/ high floors. Where, for example, should Dauri Moreta-- who is almost certainly going to pitch significant innings for the Reds this season-- rank among prospects? How about Jared Solomon or Brandon Bailey? TJ Friedl, Alejo Lopez? All of these guys will play innings at the major league level-- Cabrera has a long way to go before he even gets close to that discussion.)

We all make mistakes, especially with prospects.

    Yorman had some loud tools.

Beats the Utility INF/4th OF fetish from a few years ago.

Cincinnati Reds land top Venezuelan prospect in the international signing period
“We started laying eyes on Cabrera probably four years ago,” said Trey Hendricks, the Reds’ director of international scouting. “He was one of those players that every time you saw him, he stood out. He was one of the best players on the field and he always hit the ball hard.”

Cabrera, a right-handed hitter listed at 5-foot-11, 178 pounds, is a potential five-tool talent, but his bat was always advanced. He played in showcases outside of Venezuela, which allowed more scouts to watch him, and he excelled when he played kids two or three years older.

    Ben Badler
    @Ben Badler

The Reds have signed Ben Walmsley, LHP from Australia
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Reds added right fielder Esmith Pineda to their class of international signees. Pineda starred for Panama in the 2016 Little League World Series.

“He’s going to have big power.”
    [QUOTE]Jesse Sanchez
    @JesseSanchezMLB
As for Pineda, he is a big and strong corner outfielder who is best known for his big bat. He projects to be an average hitter overall, but he is expected to increase his power as he develops. On defense, he projects as a right fielder with a strong and accurate arm. His reads and routes to the ball are solid. He projects to be an average runner.[QUOTE]

Again, the Reds seem to be focused on power and quick bats.

It's a talent philosophy that seems to eschew BA and plate discipline-- I find that troubling.

It obviously remains to be seen if 17-year-old left-handed pitcher Ben Walmsley will pan out. But the club is hopeful it can expand its footprint Down Under as evidenced by recently adding former outfielder Donald Lutz as a scout. Lutz, who was the first German-developed player to play in the Major Leagues, also starred in Australia during winter ball.
