That Freddy Norman streak in 1976 was awesome.

That aside, I remember that when Sparky was asked about any regrets and things he did that he would change if he could and he stated the way he handled the Bobby Tolan situation. I don't remember if I knew what that was all about and forgot, or just never knew. But he felt he did Tolan wrong. Anyone have any details on what went down between the two?

After Tolan pulled a 1968 Curt Flood pulling lame on a fly all in game 7 of the 72 series the other Reds players. The main guys who would needle you as only 70s alpha males can. They took some jabs at Tolan. He was already slumping after a good start that year. He was introverted and did not take the jokes as well as others. During one batting practice there were fly balls being hit and players were talking about who could have caught that or if that was a hit. On one hit to center someone said that was an out but Rose said. No, not if Tolan is in center. Something to this effect basically men giving each other crap during a long season. Tolan did not take it well of course. He continues feeling down and slumping.
Like WOY he started growing a beard. The Players Association had already dealt with how they handled the Alex Johnson situation in 1971 with the Angels.
Management was not tolerant of any malcontents or understood any issues of mental health very well.
Just get on with it and play. They ended up trading him for Clay Kirby.

The 1973 series could have used a 1970-72 Tolan but the pitching was not great or even ok either after Game 1.
9 runs allowed in Game 3 and 5 against that barely average Mets offense? It was Staub and not much else. I don’t think Cleon Jones was that good anymore and John Milner was not yet as good as he would be with the Pirates. Who else did they have?
Ross Grimsley was another free spirit who like to let his hair grow out. They even had Pedro The Barber of the Ville Borbon cutting his hair when according to management it got too close to 1964 Beatles length. He pitched badly and Sparky and Bob just did not have tolerance for non star’s attitude. Off he goes as well in the off season for Rettenmund.

Tom Hall lost his fastball or something that year. Maybe he was worn out but he had nothing left and got hit. Billingham was great in Game 1 but had nothing in Game 5. Then Driessen has a mental error in the game and the Mets have a big inning to settle that.

I really felt bad for Cactus Jack. He had about 4 chances to win 20 in 1973 but in each start I don’t think he made it past 2-3 innings. In a couple of them he couldn’t get out of the 1st.
It was like trying to watch Votto trying to get to 100 RBI. To a lot of people now those numbers don’t matter but they did to players and to me having a 20 game winner was a big deal. And to a pitcher working almost 300 innings that year it was too. More money. It looks cooler on the baseball card and the latest Baseball Encyclopedia edition. Plus you got tired of hearing how the Reds had no 20 game winners to therefore their pitching must suck.

Jack also had a chance for 20 in 1974 and he had the same issues again. Got bombed in the 1st innings a few times. He had about 3 final starts to win it and just could not do it. Then in 75 Gullett probably could have been a Cy Young candidate if he had not had his thumb broken.

I don’t think those 2 were yet established as the good starters they became yet.

Not to be pedantic but 1974 is the only year Billingham had four shots at a 20th win and got bombed in all of them. He only started one more game after win 19 in 1973, and went seven innings in a 4-3 loss to the Giants.

I don’t mind pedantic. Just don’t be pandemic.

Re: Lockout time waster - Best Reds seasons with the bat

Thinking about Tolan and Woodward, and going back to the Frank Robinson trade, so many things that were considered mistakes or bad luck turned out to be big reasons why we had those two world series championships.

With Frank Robinson, the Reds were never going to win a championship because they didn't have the pitching. Trading him led to Carroll, Woodward and Cloninger plus Borbon. It also led to Vern Geishert(also Jim Mcglothlin) who was part of the trade that brought George Foster to the Reds. Foster being part of the Reds is the result of a lot of things going wrong. If Tolan doesn't tear his Achilles, we don't trade for Foster. If Woodward retires a year earlier, we probably don't trade Frank Duffy and therefore no Foster.

Also, if Tolan doesn't tear his achilles, Howsam might not have realized how much speed we still needed and the Morgan trade might not have happened.

Haven't read the rest of the thread (so this may well be a re-hash), but I gotta go with George Foster ('77).
