Last of "The Ventures", Don Wilson, passed away Jan. 22nd.

"The Ventures" are the #1 best-selling instrumental band of all-time. Their nickname is, "The Band that Launched a Thousand Bands".

The band was among the first to employ and popularize fuzz and flanging guitar effects, concept albums, and twelve-string guitars in rock music.

"The Ventures" were from Tacoma, Washington.

My favorite instrumentalist was another Northwestern, from Eugene, Oregon, Mason Williams.

I'm a huge Beatles fan, so I'm always looking for Beatles connections (covers, influence, etc.).

After hearing about his passing, I found a nice cover of The Beatles' "I Feel Fine" that The Ventures did.

The Ventures rivals across the sea were Cliff Richards & The Shadows. Reading up on that band, they weren't musically influential on the Beatles, but more so the level of fame they had. The Shadows inspired John Lennon & George Harrison to write "Cry for a Shadow," and instrumental number they recorded in Hamburg prior to their catapulting to fame. It's a good number (finally released on The Beatles Anthology Volume 1) which some consider a parody, others an homage, to The Shadows.

I always enjoyed whatever songs The Ventures put out, although I never owned any of their records. Folks who've never heard them ought to check them out. Their biggest hit was the theme to Hawaii Five O.

The Ventures are pretty much the well-spring for everything I like to listen to. What impresses more as time goes by is how tight they were. They went big and intricate at the same time, and they nailed it.

True. Boston's unofficial theme song came from a 1960's band out of L.A.
