Adieu is a good starter.
This game is in the Goldilocks Zone for me. Not that hard, but just hard enough.

According to science (or at least, according to one guy who's good at math), the best starting word is officially:
CRANE

Huh. Good, simple word (others try weird scrabble-legal-but-otherwise-nonsense-words with many vowels). R-N are two valuable consonants and A-E are the most common vowels, so I guess it checks out. I'm trying to think it through (it's early, brain still foggy), but placement could easily be important, too, with the finishing E being especially important to establish.
15 years ago when I was cheating at Lingo online, I had my filemaker (database) program go over the iterations of what were the best starting words for each starting letter (lingo gave the first letter). The criterion was not what gave the most correct placements or turned up more letters, but rather which starting word would give the most diverse response. The meaning being that it would split up the most possible solution sets with the smallest number of solutions in each.
The idea was that then the second word would narrow it down to one possible word for the third try.
