    P.J. O'Rourke, RIP

P.J. O'Rourke has reportedly died of lung cancer, age 74. He probably is best known for his humorous writings as editor of National Lampoon in the 1970s. I first began reading him in Car and Driver, where he combined his love for cars with his off beat humor. R.I.P.

We didn't agree politically on much of anything, but I enjoyed many things the man wrote. This is a tough one not to have in the political forum so I can't say everything I think, but I'll just say he came from a saner place than we see on that side of the aisle these days and that's a shame.

I understand. While I don't want to get too political here, to me O'Rourke didn't always fit neatly into either the conservative or liberal camp, at least as those terms are used now. I would call him a libertarian, who at times could probably outrage some people in either more traditional camp. He was always able to make me laugh and I appreciated that. I always read his columns first in Car and Driver back in the 70s and 80s before reading the rest of the magazine.

I'll give O'Rourke credit. He rode the smoking bomb all the way to the end like Col. Kong.

O’Rourke did his thing in the 1980s, and he helped fill a void, a void which was a wasteland for good American writing: Carver, Delillo, Morrison, Rushdie were standouts but are they really essential? The best things I read that decade were not originally in English - the famished road and love in the time of cholera. Finally, in 1989 came London Fields and Remains of the Day.
Good example of his writing: “better to spend money like there’s no tomorrow than to spend tonight like there’s no money.” Witty but you know, whatever.

The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn. The Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it.
