    College Baseball 2022

Today is opening day. I follow Louisville (where I'm from), Xavier (alma mater) and Wichita State (where I live), and I don't think there are high expectations for any of them. Louisville is certainly talented, and Eric Wedge has had a few years to get the Shockers turned around, so those two might be fine. Xavier will get beat up pre-conference, but they may be as good as any Big East team and find their way into the conference tournament finals.

In any event, glad to have some real baseball to follow even if there is snow on the ground in a lot of the country!

Vanderbilt baseball debuts wearable 'pitch-signaling' devices to cut down sign-stealing, improve pace of play

Over the weekend Vanderbilt (and several other schools) debuted a new wearable pitch-signaling device. Players wear the watch-like device on their glove hand to receive pitch selection information from the coaching staff. The NCAA approved these wearable devices last year. Here they are in action:

So I guess the players can't overrule the bench? That wouldn't fly in MLB but that is interesting

Starting against a power 5 school might be an issue. Tennessee took the softie route and won 9-0, 10-3, 14-0. When I was in Knoxville they played a lot of softies before SEC action

I would assume IU uses the non-con to get working on the RPI. The B1G isn't anywhere close to the SEC when it comes to baseball.

James Madison is predictably mediocre at 4-3, having been swept by Florida State before winning four in a row against George Mason and Fairleigh Dickinson, but at least we have something to cheer about in potential #1 MLB draft pick Chase DeLauter. Through 7 games, he’s hitting .379/.457/.552.

My Xavier Musketeers took a 4-1 lead to the ninth in Tuscaloosa in their opener, and I thought maybe this was going to be a pretty good year. Four batters later they had lost 5-4. Today, X lost 16-6 at NKU to fall to 0-8 with a long swing through South Carolina upcoming. I do not think this is Xavier's year.

But they're going to sell beer at home games. I am going to try to get to the UC/IU game next week.

DeLauter went 4-5 with 8 RBIs including a grand slam in a 28-4 win over VMI. Now hitting.459/.538/.811.

Might head up to the old stomping grounds in a few weeks to watch this guy play. Look for me on The Ocho or whatever.
