That’ll do. The best thing the Reds could do is build a bull pen for next year. Starts like he and Lodolo are making can’t get blown by a bad pen.

    Stats By STATS
    @OptaStats

Over his last 4 starts, Hunter Greene of the
Reds has struck out 37 while allowing just 11 hits.

No other MLB rookie in the modern era has had that many strikeouts while allowing that few hits over a 4-start span.

    Hunter Greene in 2 starts vs the Pirates: 13.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 19 K, 8 BB, 2 HBP.

Reds are 0-2 in those games. Maybe they should let Greene bat too?

The most encouraging thing about Hunter Greene's season is that he's learning how to keep the ball in the park.

First 14 starts: 20 HR allowed, 28 total runs allowed on HR

Last 9 starts: 4 HR allowed, 7 total runs allowed on HR

    Re: Hunter Greene

For all the hand-wringing done earlier in the season Hunter put together a perfectly cromulent rookie season for a 22-year-old. As long as he can stay healthy I think he'll just get better.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Most consecutive games with 8+ Ks by a Reds pitcher since 1901:

    1963 - Jim Maloney 6

    2022 - Hunter Greene 5

    7 tied with 4

    Re: Hunter Greene

Six innings of two-hit ball to end the season?

That gets him to a 4.44 ERA which is currently a 102 ERA+. (That may change a bit.)

He should rank somewhere around 90-95 out of the 150 SP with the most innings in most of the season-long stats.

Bad News: Bottom 10 in HR/9. Bottom 30 in BB/9. (Might change a bit after today.) 21.6 LD% (should drop after today).

Good News: Top 10 in MLB in K/9, K%. Top 50 in BAA. xFIP ranks 51st (with Sonny Gray). SIERA ranks 27th (tied with Yu Darvish).

I'll be very interested in his projections. (Lodolo's too, fwiw.)

    Re: Hunter Greene

Since July 9th (beginning of his 8 start run), among pitchers with 40+ IP, he's got the 8th best ERA, 6th best SIERA, and the 6th best FIP among SP between Jacob DeGrom and Carlos Rodon. His K%-BB% is 7th, between Verlander and Gausman. That'll do.

With this run, it'll be interesting to see whether he or Lodolo gets the nod on opening day 2023.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

At what number of innings do those numbers stabilize a bit, Rick? I realize he was on a heater from mid-summer on, but that type of dominance isn't likely to happen next season. Right?

What are your opinions of Lodolo and Greene?

    Re: Hunter Greene

Hunter Greene shines again and finishes his rookie year with a Reds win

At the end of his first month in MLB, Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene’s velocity reached a low point of 93.4 mph.

He allowed five home runs to the Milwaukee Brewers. He was struggling to locate his slider, and Greene’s ERA reached 8.71.

After the first month of the season, Greene had a few significant issues he needed to figure out on the fly.
He wasn’t recovering well enough in between starts, so Greene wasn’t keeping his velocity consistent.

When Greene made mistake pitches, fastballs and sliders over the middle of the plate, experienced MLB hitters responded by hitting an average of 1.5 homers per game. He also walked four-plus hitters in four of his first seven starts.

Greene had a season-changing meeting in early May with the coaching staff. He made some adjustments that turned around his season.

Greene and the coaching staff designed a routine he could use in between starts to build his strength.

Pitching coach Derek Johnson helped Greene tweak his slider, and Greene developed a pitch that can tail off like a curveball or move like a cutter.

His response showed why the Reds see Greene becoming a future All-Star and possibly the most important piece of their long-term core.
