My assumption is the Reds got a decent amount of cash to make up the difference with Garrett.

Minor hasn't had an ERA below 5 since 2019

Minor is a Vandy guy. May have pitched for DJ. Could be a solid mentor for portsiders Lodolo and Williamson. I like what Krall and Co. are doing from the pitching side of things. We’ll see what happens on the offensive side….way more ground list there than can be made up, but I’m sure there’s a smart add or two they could make.

I'm not a system player. I am a system.

I liked Amir, but he did get in his own way. All I want is the Reds to not fill our roster with a bunch of rental players. Let the Lodolos of the world have a shot and see how they develop. Barrero same thing. It's time to let the youth play and see what we have, not like we are gonna be competing for a title this year.
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/...ike-minor.htmlMinor, 34, is headed into the second season of a two-year, $18MM contract originally signed with Kansas City. He’s due $10MM this season, plus a $1MM buyout on a mutual option for the 2023 season. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand tweets that the Royals are covering that $1MM buyout. If that’s the entirety of the cash changing hands, then the Reds could be adding nearly $8MM in salary with this deal, as Garrett is projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to earn $2.2MM this coming season.
It’s frankly bizarre to see Cincinnati take on cash to acquire a struggling veteran starter, considering they commenced their offseason by placing a highly productive veteran starter, Wade Miley, on outright waivers. More confounding is that Miley was owed this exact same $10MM salary for the coming season. The move to add Minor, who has an ERA north of 5.00 in each of his past two seasons, is a clear downgrade over simply keeping Miley. One can also imagine that if the goal was simply to add a veteran to the staff after trading Sonny Gray, there were options in free agency at a similar or even lesser price point who’d offer comparable or superior production to that of Minor.
I’m hoping this means they have something big lined up for Castillo and or Mahle and minor is the proverbial veteran here to get his brains beaten in while the kids develop. Minor did have a nice season in 2019. If he can even do part of that, they could move him for something at the deadline.

Royals are paying some of Minor's salary, so not quite the same as Miley's contract.
I liked Garrett's attitude and I hope he has a bounce back year. I'm not upset that he isn't going to be on the team anymore, however.

Not upset about losing Amir but would have rather held him and see if he could get something better than an aging SP with HR issues and a bad ERA. Minor seems to consistently underperform his FIP so maybe there's something there, but I seriously doubt it.
Really good move for the Reds. Minor has been a consistent 150+ innings low 4 FIP guy the past 3 full seasons.

Seeing that the Royals are only covering $1M of Minor’s salary which makes the move a little more puzzling, though I still think it’s a good move. I initially assumed they would be chipping in more given the Reds’ recent direction. I guess I’ll wait and see what other moves are on the horizon.
