    Re: 2022 Reds Injury Updates

They’ve been saying seasons too long since the Sex Pistols were touring the South and converting red necks and hippies to punk. The Dodgers even struggled early last year and it was the Giants who were blowing everyone away and the Padres looked to be the WC team. It all played out in the end because the season tends to even things out at some point. Struggling teams turn things around. I’m looking at the White Sox and Phillies as candidates. The Yankees are not going to sustain what they are doing. Their staff is pitching like it’s 1968. Unless they are cheating I can’t see that bullpen maintaining that sort of dominance. I agree that the bad teams though are even worse then they used to be. You rarely saw teams lose 100 games except in expansion years before tanking became cool.

I mean, hell, the reds started 3-22 and are somehow not the worst team in MLB record-wise. Still seems like the haves and have-nots to me.

Looking at the standings now, half the league is basically already eliminated from postseason contention. The playoff picture is already more or less settled, and it’s June 12th. Also, MLB season is entirely too long, no reason to be 162 games long.

Tigers threw a boatload of cash at Javy Baez and he has a .552 OPS. Yikes.
Compared to, say, 25 years ago? Yes, much more parity. And now with even more ways to get in the postseason door, it’s that much more doable. The Reds could easily be in the mix but they choose not to be.

I agree the Reds are not trying, just speaking to MLB in general.

    Re: 2022 Reds Injury Updates

LHP Nick Lodolo (lower right back strain)
    Expected return: Late June
During an Arizona Complex League game to start his rehab assignment, Lodolo pitched two innings and allowed one run on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Reds general manager Nick Krall was among those in attendance watching and the reports to manager David Bell were positive.

“Great velocity, healthy,” Bell said. “Definitely, everyone saw enough to push him to the next step in his return. It will be a start in Triple-A.”

Lodolo, who has not pitched for the Reds since his winning start April 24 vs. the Cardinals, left Arizona for Durham to meet Triple-A Louisville for his next start. Bell expected him to get at least two starts with Louisville before a decision is made on whether to activate the rookie left-hander -- Mark Sheldon (Last updated: June 14)

IF/OF Max Schrock (left calf strain)
    Expected return: June
Schrock was dialed back slightly on his rehab assignment while dealing with a foot issue, but was expected to play for Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday.

“I think tonight will tell us a lot. He could be ready after tonight,” manager David Bell explained.

Since Schrock's rehab assignment began on May 28 with Louisville, he is 9-for-31 (.290) with one homer. He has played at second base, third base, right field and served as the DH. Schrock has been on the 60-day injured list all season after he was injured during an April 3 Spring Training game vs. the D-backs. -- Mark Sheldon (Last updated: June 14)

David Bell said Tyler Naquin is “way ahead of schedule” coming back from his quad strain. The initial timeline was 4-to-6 weeks.

David Bell said Donovan Solano could be really close, as soon as Tuesday.

Nick Lodolo will pitch in Triple-A tomorrow. He could be back at the end of June.

Tony Santillan has been dealing with the back issue over the last few days.

Infielder Donovan Solano, who signed a one-year deal with Reds in the offseason, could join the Reds as early as Tuesday’s series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Solano was seven games into his rehab assignment entering Friday with seven hits in 21 at-bats and three doubles.

Lefty Nick Lodolo will make a rehab start with Triple-A Louisville on Saturday in Durham, North Carolina. The best-case scenario is Lodolo makes two rehab starts at Louisville and returns to the Reds’ rotation by the end of the month. Bell said the Reds were targeting around June 28 unless he needs an extra rehab start.

The Reds placed reliever Tony Santillan on the 15-day injured list with lower back pain on Friday, irritation in his sacroiliac joint.

“It’s kind of gradually gotten worse over the last four or five days,” Reds manager David Bell said.

The hope, Bell said, is Santillan will require only a minimum stint on the IL. It’s a loss for the back of the Reds’ bullpen, which has struggled holding leads this month. Santillan leads the team with four saves.

“Pretty much every guy in our bullpen now has pitched in the higher leverage spots, so we’re going to continue to give guys opportunities,” Bell said.

Picked a perfect night to catch a Durham Bulls game. Bats in town and Lodolo on the hill.

Agreed - its not the injuries doing the Reds in this year, its the cheapness. The two teams at the top of the division are not playing .600 ball - this is a division for the taking by a team with talent that wants to take it. The core talent the Reds had before going cheap could've been in the mix.
    Where we gonna go?

The Reds have used the injured list 31 times with 22 different players dating back to placing Antone on the 60-day IL.

The Reds put Nick Lodolo on the 60-day, but it’s a procedural move. He’s still going to start on June 23 in AAA and would be eligible to return a few days after that.

Justin Dunn (from the Mariners trade) will make his first rehab start in Dayton on Sunday.

Vladimir Gutierrez will throw a bullpen this week.

Tyler Naquin is “really close” to starting a rehab assignment.
“Swinging and throwing is not an issue. It’s more about full-speed running, cutting, stopping and starting. It seems to be going well with what we’re doing so far.”

The key for Naquin is deceleration, a process that relies on the quads. The Reds have found some dependable ways to build up Naquin’s quad strength.

“You’ve got to be smart with it and take each day as a win if you don’t feel anything.”

Also, Tyler Stephenson could get his cast off in the next few days.

    Re: 2022 Reds Injury Updates

LHP Nick Lodolo (lower right back strain)
    Expected return: Late June-Early July
Lodolo was shifted to the 60-day IL on June 21, but that’s not going to change his timetable. He is scheduled to make his next rehab start with Triple-A Louisville on June 23, during which he is expected to throw 65-70 pitches.

“We haven’t decided yet if he’ll make another,” Reds manager David Bell said.

On Saturday for Louisville, Lodolo threw 49 pitches over two innings, while allowing two runs on four hits. All six of his recorded outs were strikeouts.

Lodolo hasn't pitched for the Reds since April 24, a winning effort against St. Louis.

OF Tyler Naquin (left quad strain)
    Expected return: Early July
Naquin ran the bases once already and is scheduled to do so again on Wednesday, manager David Bell said.

“If that goes well, I think it’s real close,” Bell said of Naquin's running.

A rehab assignment of 3-5 games would likely be the next step.

Naquin was originally expected to miss 4-6 weeks with a grade 2 left quad strain he suffered on May 31 at Boston.

C Tyler Stephenson (broken right thumb)
    Expected return: TBD
In a positive development on Wednesday, Stephenson had the protective cast removed from his right thumb and was cleared to begin some light baseball activity. A foul tip fractured Stephenson’s thumb on June 9 and he is expected to miss four to six weeks.

“It feels good. Obviously, now it’s just progressing as much as I can do and kind of handle,” Stephenson said. “Today was the first step. I played catch at 60 feet or so, very low-key. It feels good. It feels promising.”

Stephenson has not yet received a map for how the rest of his rehabilitation will play out.

“I think it’s really just a tolerance thing and obviously making sure I’m 100 percent before I come back,” he said. “I know the big question is going to be hitting and the vibration of the bat. That’s really going to be big test, hopefully sooner than later.”

    RHP Justin Dunn (right shoulder)
    Expected return: Mid-to-late July
Dunn is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with High-A Dayton on Sunday. The expectation is that the right-hander could be ready by around the All-Star break. He's being built up to be a starter in the big league rotation.

The Reds acquired Dunn as part of a trade that sent Eugenio Suárez and Jesse Winker to the Mariners. He last pitched in a big league game June 17, 2021, for Seattle. He missed the rest of last season with right shoulder inflammation.

Look around the game, there are tons of injuries, it's a result of the lock out and the press and the medical teams spent that whole time saying this would happen.
