I'm hesitant to believe this. I think it has to be fake, yet it looks so real...

It was a needless, tasteless joke targeting someone’s appearance from a medical condition. No satire. No speaking truth to power. No punching up. I don’t know if I would expect or recommend someone get violent as a response but, as it already happened and no one got seriously hurt, I think my reaction is good for Will Smith defending his wife. I also say that being 1,000 times more of a Chris Rock fan than a Will Smith fan.
I lost interest in the Oscars years ago. Guess this was the one year to watch. lol
Edit: nah. Although I am interested about what Sean Penn will do with his Oscar(s). Guess I'll just have to wait till tomorrow to find out.

There are very few situations where I think violence is a reasonable response to words and this was not one of those.

It seems that Will Smith has earned another trip to live in Bel Air with his Auntie Vivian.
But seriously it’s a shame it happened because Coda winning was a wonderful surprise that should be the headline. It’s a near perfect movie, story and acting wise and might be the lowest budget movie (in modern day dollars) ever.

The "big slap" could've been staged. I prefer the swipe Amy Schumer took at Leonardo DiCaprio.
It's both incredibly disappointing and tragically ironic that, later during his crocodile tear-laden acceptance speech, Smith attempted to leverage Richard Williams' role as a familiy "protector" as cover for his behavior when, instead, Smith behaved just like the public tennis court thugs who assaulted Williams for "disrespecting" them in the film for which he won the award.

I don't think it was fake, but the slap definitely either didn't connect like it should have for the wind up and follow through, or he wasn't trying to really get him good. Originally Will was laughing about the joke, but once Jada rolled her eyes and said whatever she said under her breathe, then Will took it to where he took it. I think it was being sensitive on her part. Every year, not just at the Grammy's, but any event like that, the host gets up there and cracks jokes on people. It wasn't even that bad of a joke. Rock should have joked about Jada cheating on Will, that would have been hilarious. Good on Rock for just laughing it off. Will comes out of this looking like a chump!

Considering Jada Pinkett Smith practically embarrassed Will by discussing their open marriage and how she was sleeping with other men, but then again I’ve never been in that situation so I can’t really judge.
Should have been handled backstage though assuming it wasn’t staged.

The joke was horrible and Will's response was horrible.
Everything was horrible.
A lot of people are saying this on social media. That doesn't mean anything IMO. Some people laugh or smile when they don't know how to react to something negative. I am the kind of person that laughs at a funeral, the more upset I am the more I joke and laugh. I simply do not know what to do with myself. At this point my family and close friends understand what is going on. At work when something goes really wrong and I am in a meeting with coworkers, same thing. I have to say "sometimes you have to laugh to stop yourself from cryin."
Either way, people react to bad situations in different ways. Especially when you are sitting in front of millions of people and some jackass comedian made fun of your wife's medical condition. To me, first reaction would of course to try to fake laugh through it. Then he saw how upset it made his wife.
Not excusing hitting Rock, wasn't the answer, but I think Rock absolutely crossed a line. Jada recently lost her hair because of a medical condition. Why anyone would think that is something to be made fun of in front of millions of people during a live broadcast, I have absolutely no idea.

When did the Oscars become the Indie Movie Awards?
I literally had not heard of Coda until last night. I literally do not know one person that has seen it or even heard of it. It made $1.1 million at the box office on a $10 mil budget. I am not saying money should decide what the best picture is, I am just saying nobody saw this movie.
This is the reason nobody cares about the Oscars now, IMO. Dune was clearly the best movie of 2021. And people actually saw it and enjoyed watching it.

Will Smith was absolutely laughing at the joke because, as far as Oscars jokes go, it was pretty funny. Then his wife acted offended and he put on a show (his first). The Oscars show has been doing the same thing for 50 years. If you're a celeb attending, you are open for good natured ribbing. It's alike a min-roast. Thanks goodness JK Simmons didn't decide to attack the ladies for being shown as Timothy Chalomet after he'd gone bad with Covid.
The Academy then was paralyzed with inaction after a presenter was attacked. Smith should have been escorted out at the first break. But then he won and then his real Oscar performance as the victim defending his family.
Smith should be banned from ever attending the Oscars again. He's lucky that Rock declined to press charges.
