It is very odd...Rock had just joked about Jada, Smith comes on stage, Rock puts his hands behind his back and leans in even. Then gets the crap slapped out of him. Just a weird event all around. I'm 50/50 on whether it was staged or not. But when the Oscars are talking about how bad ratings are the day prior, ya never know!

Again, why in the world would Will Smith agree to this? Give me one logical reason.

I am not an expert on fighting (I have had maybe 2-3 in my life) but I always knew when someone was coming at me with hostile intentions. Rock grew up in Brooklyn he had to have know Smith was not pleased to walk all the way up onstage.

It was on stage at the oscars, he probably thought Will Smith was going to do something funny

I have no idea...you ever think that could fall in to the 50% of the reason I don't think it was staged.

If it was staged, it was just Smith and Rock in on it. The Oscar TV producers were blindsided.

It wasn't staged, Rock leaned in likely thinking Smith was going to say something to him. Smith was wrong - no matter if the joke was in bad taste. I didn't know of Pinkett's hair issues, and she's still quite attractive with short hair - she has nothing to be ashamed of. Smith's speech made it worse -he needs lots of counseling.

And I like his performance and the movie King Richard. I also really liked Coda. But boy, Smith is nuts.

This explanation makes the most sense. I think a lot of people didn't know ab out her condition. Rock's reaction to getting slapped leads me to think he didn't know. He said that he was just making a G.I. Jane joke.

I agree, but its always been like that here. We have school shootings and people basically just say "oh well" and move on.

There’s no way that was staged, which is especially clear if you watch the uncensored version. Unless both Smith and Rock are much better actors than I gave them credit for.

I didn’t know about Jada’s condition, which my brother happens to share, so I just thought it was a clumsy, mediocre joke by Rock at the time. Obviously takes on a different context if he knew about her alopecia beforehand, but still no excuse for what Smith did.

You are the king of hyperbole! Who has ever said "oh well". I think about everyone would agree they are horrible things. Nobody can agree on how to reduce/stop them is the problem.

"basically" is the key word in my post you quoted.

If it wasn't normalized in this country we would do something about school shootings, we do not.

Because nobody can agree on what to do, it's not because people just think "oh well"

I feel like if this same thing happened pre-covid, Will Smith would have been escorted out of the building by security.

Things are different now, and not at all in a good way.
