From Bell's pregame interview, he said it was due to the shortened spring training. None of the position players have gone three games in a row. Bell thinks by middle to end of next week they won't be considering that anymore.

Bench wss a freak. We have never seen anyone like him before or since. Also Bench was abused. Sparky admitted later on he should have rested him more.

Pham didn't need to hit it directly to the second base bag.
Bench sat a bunch in the two world series years. Not as much as catchers do today. But in his mvp seasons he rarely sat.
So the older he got the more he sat out.
That filthy slider should have been a strike.
