Sept. 23: RHP Connor Overton reinstated from 60-day IL
Overton was reinstated from the IL after making two rehab starts with Triple-A Louisville, fanning nine and walking three over 7 2/3 innings.
The righty was on the IL because of a stress reaction in his lower back.
Overton, who last started on May 17 for the Reds, will be in a relief role for the rest of the season.

He pitched for the Pirates after Toronto waived him. They had to release him for the Reds to sign him.

As long as you are on a 40-man roster you can't become a free agent until you have six years of service time. Overton is on the Reds 40-man roster and has less than a year of service time...

I'm apparently a moron.
I've believed-- for decades-- that once you were released by a team off their 40-man roster, you were exempt from arbitration and service time shenanigans and could largely control your own future.
Correct, he's a 29 year old journeyman with only 40 major league innings pitched, on his fourth big league club in four years - for a reason.
The results from his 4 starts were nice but it was a super small sample with a .208 BaBIP Against (3.6 K/9 is ugly fwiw). Those innings shouldn't matter when making roster decisions for next year.
He's this year's version of Art Warren, looks phenomenal and then craps the bed in the next season.
EDIT: I won't be torn if he loses his 40 man spot to someone with more upside. The Reds are going to have to make a ton of cuts and additions this winter.
He's the type of guy you sign too a minor league contract with an invite to spring camp and hope you never have to use him in the bigs.
