I sure had to eat my words about Votto last year and was glad to do it. I just can’t understand why he cannot hit in the month of April.

He's about the only hitter we should expect to improve considerably from here on out. He and India. Everyone else is either producing at their level or are so bad that their improvements aren't likely to be appreciable.

He's still hitting the ball hard. I'm not worried.

Votto (like all the Reds) is really having issues with LH's (10 K's 17 PA's) he has a .143 BABIP vs RH's, and all his BB vs RH's

I expect him to do well vs RH's as the season progresses, however he will probably segue into being more platoon over the rest of his contract, so certain LH's should be avoided to at least keep his head clean and get a RH bat in there

Votto has zero protection in front of him
And behind him. His numbers will be bad this year because of this reason.

He can still hit, but why throw him anything to hit?

I thought this was somewhat debunked. Wouldn't he just go back to walking all the time then? He's never been 2001 Barry Bonds. I don't think they are all that afraid to pitch to him.

Reds were awful against LHP last season too, and they decided to respond with another year of Aquino, and a couple of (very likely) washed-up vets (Solano and Pham). It's clear they're terrible at assembling talent, or just not even trying to win.

No extra base hits in 4 days. Should I be concerned?

The only guys they can get to take their money is when no one else wants those players and/or the Reds are the high bid by far and they completely overspend on those guys. Its the same way they got Shogo and Moose. Add Pham to that list. Solano miht be OK, but seeing how he's teh short side of the platoon with very little defensive value, it might be too much as well.
All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

Re: Is Joey Votto Washed?/What to do with Joey Votto?

They knew when they extended him they'd be paying him >20M/year when he was closing in on 40 yrs old, now it's time to pay the piper. I'm sure the GM at the time probably knew he wasn't going to be GM at the back end of the extension. I am disappointed after his resurgent year in 2021 that no effort was made to try and maintain more offense in the lineup around him. Basically if they were pre-Arbitration they kept them and shed anyone else they could.

I expect they'll pay him through next year and buy out his final year. They can't trade him without his permission and it appears he's content to remain with the Reds. Even if he allows a trade they'd have to pony up most of the money owed to him. We'll get to watch him finish his career as a Red and hope that he ages better than Moose.
